FAQ

Frequently asked questions about GRE

About the GRE

  • What is the GRE?

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a 4 hour exam which measures your abilities in mathematical and verbal reasoning, as well as in analytical writing. The GRE is offered around the year at more than 1,000 test centers around the world. Most test takers opt for the computer based version of the GRE, which means that the test itself is taken while sitting at a computer.

  • Who should take the GRE?

The GRE is a test taken by students who plan to apply to a graduate degree program at universities in the USA and Canada. So, whether you are a full-time student or are employed full-time, if you wish to do an M.A./M.S/Ph.D program at a US or Canadian university, then you need to take the GRE. Universities will use your GRE score as one important factor to decide whether to accept you into their graduate program.

  • What skills are tested on the GRE?

The GRE score actually comprises 3 separate scores, each of which measures a different ability or skill:

    1. Quantitative Reasoning (or "Quant" for short) is scored between 130-170.
      • You will be given 40-60 Quant questions to solve in 70-105 minutes.
      • Topics tested include Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Data Analysis.
    2. Verbal Reasoning (or "Verbal" for short) is also scored between 130-170
      • You will be given 40-60 Verbal questions to solve in 60-90 minutes.
      • Areas tested include your vocabulary, your ability to read and understand complex sentences, paragraphs, and passages from diverse fields, as well as your ability to think and reason critically.
    3. Analytical Writing Assessment (or "AWA" for short) is scored between 0-6.
      • You will be asked to type 2 essays in 60 minutes.
      • The first essay will ask you to argue your stance on a given issue and the second essay will ask you to analyze a given argument.
  • What is a “good” GRE score?

There is no hard line that separates a good GRE score from a bad GRE score. A 130 in any section is the same as if you have scored zero on that section, and a 170 is as if you have aced that section. Besides, different university programs have different expectations from your GRE score, for example, Engineering graduate programs tend to care more about your Math ability than your Verbal score, so 160+ in GRE Quant is something you’d want to have on your Engineering application, if you’re aiming for a top ranked school. On the other hand, a graduate program in the Humanities may care more about your Verbal score than your Quant score.

All that being said, typically, a combined Verbal and Quant score of 320+ is typically considered “good” and a combined score of 330+ is considered “great”.

  • Why is a good GRE score important?

Approximately 700,000 test takers across the world take the GRE every year, including over 400,000 test takers from the USA and over 100,000 from India. Among these thousands of test takers, fewer than 10% of test takers score 165+ in Quant and less than 5% score 165+ in Verbal. What do these numbers imply? Consider this: the average GRE Quant score of Engineering M.S./Ph.D students at a university like Harvard is as high as 165. So, in order to get into a top-tier school, a good GRE score is the rule!

Moreover, for many of you, the other factors which determine your chances of admission, such as your academic performance and transcripts cannot be improved right now (unless you can turn the clock back :-) ), and you may not be able to rework your research projects or publish papers before university admission deadlines. Therefore, a great GRE score can dramatically improve your chances of being accepted into your dream university!

  • When should I take the GRE?

The GRE is conducted around the year at more than 1,000 centers across more than 180 countries. So the key to deciding when you should take the GRE depends on the application deadlines for the graduate schools to which you are applying. So first find out these deadlines from the websites of the universities on your list and then work backwards from the earliest deadline. For example, a university whose application deadline is on December 15 would need to receive your GRE scores on or before December 15. Keep in mind that it can take as long as four weeks for your official scores to arrive at your designated schools.

The GRE is offered at more than 1,000 centers across the world almost every day. Visit the official GRE website to view available test dates and book your test. While theoretically you could sign up for the GRE with only two days' notice, don't rely upon this luxury. Reserve your slot at least one month prior to your desired test date.

  • For how long should I study for the GRE?

Preparing for the GRE depends a lot on your specific skills, background and experience. For example, having a good vocabulary is essential to score high on the GRE, but building a good vocabulary from scratch is a time-consuming process! So it could take you anywhere between a matter of days to up to a year to build your vocabulary, depending on your current level of vocabulary! Having said that, we find that most students take about 3-6 months to prepare for the GRE.

You should also consider how much time you will be able to carve out for studying on a regular basis and whether you have the discipline to stick to your plan or whether you will need help to with doing so. Moreover, you may want to factor in some extra time into your planning process for unexpected delays because you can only take the GRE test once per calendar month.

  • How would I know whether I am ready to take the GRE?

We recommend that you take our FREE 65 minute GRE Diagnostic Test right away and find out where you stand. As soon as you complete this test you'll receive your Diagnostic GRE score. By comparing your Diagnostic Test scores with your desired score, i.e., your Target GRE score, you can how far you away you are from your target. Our GRE Diagnostic Test will also provide you an in depth report describing your strengths and weaknesses on the test, which will shed more light on your readiness for the test.

So in a nutshell, if you are satisfied with your Diagnostic Test score, then you may be ready for the actual GRE. If you are still away from your desired GRE score and you need help getting there, then select the right Galvanize course for you or call us at +91 95000 20740 to help you in this process.
