What is a Statement Of Purpose?
How can we define a Statement of Purpose?
The statement of purpose (SoP) is a short admission essay written as a part of your graduate school application. A well-written SoP increases your chances of admission to the program you desire.
Essentially, a SoP showcases your qualities, explaining to the admission committee why you deserve admission.
The typical length of a Statement of Purpose is 1.5 pages. An SOP aims to provide a platform upon which the applicants may distinguish themselves and convince the university to give them admission. Universities abroad often ask for an SOP to understand the students in all aspects.
Everything else is numeric. If you look at your CGPA, your GRE score, or your TOEFL score – they’re all numbers. The statement of purpose, on the other hand, is an opportunity for you to:
- Talk about your story.
- Your choices
- Your decisions
- Your sacrifices
- Your journey
While you do have to talk about your academic life, the beauty of an SOP is that you get to talk about your personality and express your understanding of life, success, and achievements. Also, the Statement of Purpose (SOP) is an opportunity for you to elaborate on any aspects of your profile that you feel need clarification. For example, if your GPA is low, it’s a good idea to address this in your statement.
For the academic aspect, the Statement of Purpose must include why you’re choosing this particular course or specialization and how your background or education, your internships, projects, or experiences validate your case to specialize in this particular field.
You also have to talk about what you plan to do once you get the desired degree from the university of your choice what you want to do in your career afterward and how you plan on applying your knowledge and experience to further your career.
Components of a Successful SOP
What are the contents of a successful Statement of Purpose for Graduate School?
Let’s look at a tentative template that you may follow. We bring this template to you from our experience of guiding many students in drafting successful SoPs. An SoP, typically, has three major sections – an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
The introduction usually consists of one paragraph, the body may have 3-4 paragraphs depending on the number of things you wish to share. The conclusion is generally winded up in a paragraph or two. These should briefly tie down all the points and neatly highlight why the school should consider you.
Step 1 – Begin the SoP with a brief introduction about yourself. We like to begin with a quote that best defines you or that you can relate to. Follow the quote with your high school and undergraduate work and how they prepared you for your next big step.
Step 2 – The middle paragraph of the SoP is important as this is where we’ll discuss your specialization. Here you can talk about what inspired you to want to get a higher degree, and further describe any projects that you did in your targeted specialization.
Step 3 – Then we recommend adding content that specifically addresses your reasons for choosing a certain university. You can talk about why you chose this particular university, why this particular program is in that university, and what you plan to do after you graduate from there.
Step 4 – Then we add the conclusion to the SoP which includes bringing together your goals and aspirations after the degree and your career plans.
In terms of paragraphs, a typical Statement of Purpose looks like this:
- Paragraph 1: Introduction.
- Paragraph 2: High School and Undergraduate Work.
- Paragraph 3: Discussion of internship and work experience.
- Paragraph 4: Link the above discussion to the key paragraph about your targetted specialization and how the above experiences have prepared you for the desired degree.
- Paragraph 5: The university-specific paragraph wherein you talk about why you have chosen this university and what it offers that you will benefit from.
- Paragraph 6: Conclusion which will talk about your aspirations and future career plans.
Please note that the paragraph division shared above is not the only way to go about it. It could vary as per your convenience and content.
When writing your Statement of Purpose, it’s important to keep it concise. Writing these reflections takes time and deep thought, so we recommend starting early. Aim to draft your statement well in advance, allowing for a first draft, a second draft, and any additional edits that may be necessary. Begin considering these aspects right away.
Before you start to write a statement of purpose, it is best to spend time researching the programs and schools you plan to apply to. Take notes on faculty whose research or academic interests align with yours. This content will be very useful when you begin to draft the SoP.
Be mindful that the requirements vary from school to school. So, closely adhere to any guidelines that the chosen school offers. Follow prompts and word counts carefully.

The Introduction Paragraph of the Statement of Purpose
The intro section of your SoP should set up why you are applying to the program. You could connect with your academic focus or directly state your career inspiration. To grab the reader’s attention it is helpful to open with a brief anecdote. However, it must be thematically tied to your academic interests.
The introduction paragraph is vital as it introduces you to the reader. As such, it could require a bit of creativity to draft one. So, do not rush with it. If required leave the introduction paragraph for the last. You may begin with the main body of the SoP.
Starting with the introduction, you must be clear about your specialization. Try to be honest and avoid creating unnecessary stories. Keep it simple and to the point. Use your best qualities and traits to introduce yourself.
The Main Body of the Statement of Purpose
This is the part of the SoP where you will include the details of the WHAT, WHY, and HOW of your academic journey. You may divide this part into several paragraphs as discussed above. You can dedicate one paragraph to talk about how you evolved as an undergraduate student. This will include your project work, your thesis, any paper presentations you may have done, the research you did if any, etc, and how you would like to extend this work in the future.
Mention your strengths and skills. You may talk about various things you took up to enhance your knowledge base. It is important to highlight your goal and mention the steps you have taken to move towards accomplishing those goals.
Talk about your internship and work experiences and any extracurricular activities that you may have participated in or excelled in. You may also include any cultural or social roles that have played an important role in your life.
The main body of the SoP will also include the university-specific which will include details about the chosen program at the chosen university. Depending on what the degree is, the length and depth of this part will vary. However, some things are crucial to mention such as naming the professor/s whose work aligns with your interest.
Keep in mind that there will be several documents along with your application including your transcript, resume, and letters of recommendation. So, avoid repetition of information. Something which is detailed in the resume need not be given a lot of space in the SoP.
It will be helpful if you can address how your background shaped the trajectory of your ideas and goals.
The Conclusion of the Statement of Purpose
The concluding paragraphs of your Statement of Purpose should bring a sense of closure to your writing. There is no need to summarize or recap any of the details.
It is important to leave your reader with a final insight and frame your path heading forward. This could include your career plans after the completion of your degree. Or you could mention the goals that you wish to pursue in terms of contributing to existing problems in the field. Try to leave the readers with the idea that you are ready for this next step and that their program is where you belong.
While the Statement of Purpose is not the sole document upon which the admission depends, it plays an important role in influencing the admissions team.
