Frequently Asked Questions
TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language — Internet-Based Test) measures English proficiency for non-native speakers applying to universities, graduate programs, and professional certification bodies in English-speaking countries. The exam tests Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking across realistic academic scenarios — not just grammar and vocabulary.
Most top-tier US universities require TOEFL scores of 100–110 on the legacy 0–120 scale for graduate programs and 90–100 for undergraduate admissions. UK universities typically require 80–100+ depending on the program. As a rule of thumb: 80–90 is competitive for most universities, 100+ for elite/competitive programs, and 110+ for the most selective institutions. Check your target university’s specific requirement — some programs have posted minimums while others don’t specify a score. These thresholds are quoted on the 0–120 scale used before 21 January 2026; a 100 is comparable to band 5 and a 110 to band 5.5 on the 1–6 scale. Check whether your university has restated its requirement.
ETS advises allowing approximately two hours to complete the TOEFL iBT. It includes four sections: Reading (about 30 minutes), Listening (about 29 minutes), Writing (about 23 minutes), and Speaking (about 8 minutes). The 2026 test adapts to your performance, so the number of items and the exact time can vary. Since 21 January 2026, each section is reported on a 1–6 band scale and the overall band is the average of the four sections. The exam is fully online and tests integrated skills — for example, you read/listen before writing or speaking.
To register for TOEFL: (1) Visit ets.org and create a free ETS account, (2) Click “Register for TOEFL” and select your test location, date, and format (at a test center or at home), (3) Complete your profile with academic and personal information, (4) Select your score recipients (universities), (5) Pay the exam fee (₹17,999 in India, including GST; the fee varies by country), and (6) Confirm your registration. You’ll receive an admission ticket and test details via email. Most testing dates fill quickly — register 3–4 weeks in advance if possible.
Most dedicated students reach 100+ with 10–16 weeks of focused preparation, depending on their starting English level and target score. Beginners may need 16–20 weeks. The key is consistent daily practice (at least 1–2 hours) combined with expert feedback on Writing and Speaking, where most students plateau without guidance. Galvanize’s mentored approach, with personalized feedback after every full-length test, helps students reach 100+ in 10–12 weeks on average. Scores of 100+ refer to the legacy 0–120 scale; on the 1–6 scale ETS introduced on 21 January 2026, that is band 5 or above.
