Your TOEFL iBT Overall Band
--
Quick Answer

The TOEFL Score Calculator computes your TOEFL iBT overall band (1–6) by averaging your four section bands — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, each reported 1–6 in 0.5 increments — and rounding to the nearest half band. ETS replaced the 0–120 scale on 21 January 2026; through January 2028 score reports also show a comparable 0–120 score. As a benchmark, band 5 (comparable 95+) suits most universities and band 5.5 (comparable 107+) is competitive for top-tier schools. Enter your section bands above, or switch to legacy 0–120 if your score report was issued before 21 January 2026.

What is TOEFL iBT?

TOEFL is a standardised test designed to check the student's ability to understand English. TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. The test is conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test helps students improve their English writing, speaking, reading and listening skills to study and stay in an English-speaking country.

TOEFL is accepted in various English-speaking countries especially in the USA. Other than the USA, other countries accept TOEFL to measure one's English language proficiency, such as Canada, Ireland, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, etc. The TOEFL iBT is delivered on computer, either at a test centre or at home with remote proctoring. ETS retired the TOEFL iBT Paper Edition after 20 January 2024, so there is no current paper-based TOEFL.

The test is divided into four modules: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

How to Calculate TOEFL iBT Overall Score?

Since 21 January 2026, the TOEFL iBT reports each section and the overall score on a 1–6 scale in 0.5 increments. Score reports issued before that date use the 0–120 scale, with four sections each scored 0–30. Most Universities provide admissions based on the Overall Score, with some selected universities that have specific requirements based on section scores also.

To calculate the Overall Band from your section bands, average all four and round to the nearest half band:

Overall Band = (Reading + Listening + Speaking + Writing) ÷ 4

For example, section bands of 5.0, 5.5, 4.0 and 5.0 average to 4.875, which rounds to an overall band of 5.0.

On the legacy 0–120 scale — used by score reports issued before 21 January 2026 — the overall score is instead the sum of the four section scores.

Update: On 21 January 2026, the TOEFL iBT Score Format changed from 0–120 to 1–6. The new Scoring Format is easier to compare with Worldwide Standards and more closely aligned to the CEFR framework.

TOEFL Reading Scores

The reading section takes about 30 minutes. The 2026 test adapts to your performance, so the number of questions and the exact time can vary. The difficulty level of the vocabulary in the reading section differs from authentic American news sources because TOEFL aims at an academic approach.

Unlike listening, reading also has raw scores converted into scale scores. Students' Language Proficiency level depends on the scale score.

The scale scores below are on the legacy 0–30 section scale, used by score reports issued before 21 January 2026. Since then, each section is reported as a 1–6 band.

Reading Proficiency Levels

TOEFL Listening Scores

The listening section takes about 29 minutes. The 2026 test adapts to your performance, so the number of questions and the exact time can vary. Scoring of TOEFL listening is done by converting raw scores into scaled scores.

On the legacy 0–30 section scale, each raw score carries one point and 28 raw scores equals 30 scaled scores. The formula that converts raw scores into scale scores is:

Scale scores = Raw scores / 28 * 30

The scale scores below are on that legacy scale. Since 21 January 2026, each section is reported as a 1–6 band.

TOEFL Writing Scores

The writing section has two tasks:

  • Task 1: Integrated writing task
  • Task 2: Writing for an Academic Discussion Task

The writing section takes about 23 minutes for both tasks. Writing sections in TOEFL is often challenging as students must listen and read carefully to frame new ideas in a limited time.

The scale scores below are on the legacy 0–30 section scale, used by score reports issued before 21 January 2026.

TOEFL Speaking Scores

In the Speaking section, the student gets four questions:

  • Question 1: Independent speaking task
  • Questions 2 to 4: Integrated Speaking Tasks

The speaking section takes about 8 minutes. Scoring of the speaking section is based on task achievement, fluency, clarity of speech, grammatical usage, vocabulary, and development of the topic.

Equivalency Scale for TOEFL iBT and IELTS Scores

The TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language, and IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. Both are the most popular English proficiency exams for Study Abroad and other Immigration programs in various countries, such as the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, etc.

When comparing TOEFL iBT scores with IELTS, we follow ETS’s own published comparison. For example, a TOEFL iBT overall score of 75 is equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0, and an IELTS score of 7.0 corresponds to a TOEFL iBT score between 94 and 101. Each row below gives the TOEFL range ETS maps to that band; ETS publishes a band of 0–4 for any score of 31 or less. Source: ETS, Compare TOEFL iBT Scores.

TOEFL Band Score to IELTS Conversion (2026 Scale)

For tests taken on or after 21 January 2026, ETS publishes a comparison between the 1–6 band scale and IELTS. This is the table ETS now treats as authoritative; the 0–120 table above remains useful only for interpreting scores issued before that date.

IELTS (1–9)ReadingListeningWritingSpeakingTOEFL Total (1–6)

5.53.53333.5
532.522.52.5
4.52.51.51.522

ETS keys that table by IELTS band, and the mapping is not one-to-one in reverse. Read from a TOEFL total band, it gives:

TOEFL Total (1–6)IELTS

1.0No published equivalent

Band 6 corresponds to IELTS 8.0, 8.5 and 9.0 in ETS’s table, so it has no single equivalent. Bands 3.0 and 1.0 have no IELTS row at all — ETS does not publish one, and neither do we. Source: ETS, TOEFL iBT Score Scale Update.

Equivalency Scale for TOEFL and CEFR

The CEFR stands for Common European Framework of Reference for Languages to compare the Proficiency levels across multiple languages. The TOEFL iBT Score is comparable to the CEFR for various purposes. A score of 95 or above is equivalent to the C1 Level, and 114 or above is equivalent to C2. Most Universities require at least a B2 Level for admission purposes, which is comparable to a 72 overall score in the TOEFL iBT Exam.

Latest TOEFL iBT Scoring Criteria from Jan 2026

On 21 January 2026, ETS replaced the TOEFL iBT 0–120 scoring scale with a 1–6 scale in increments of 0.5, for simplicity and closer correlation with the CEFR.

The Universities and concerned authorities were informed and guided by ETS to update the accepted Scoring range to comply with the change. For two years after the change — through January 2028 — students receive both the new 1–6 band and a comparable 0–120 score to ensure a smooth transition.

ETS states that the comparable total score printed on a score report is the midpoint of the band’s equivalent 0–120 range, not its lower bound. A band of 4.5, for example, is reported with a comparable score of 90. The Est. Total (0–120) column below shows where each band begins.

TOEFL Scores & Equivalents — Quick Answers

What is a good TOEFL iBT score?

On the current 1–6 band scale, band 5.5 (comparable 107+) is competitive for top-tier universities, band 5 (comparable 95+) is suitable for most universities, and band 4.5 (comparable 86+) meets the requirement at many programmes. The overall band is the average of the four section bands (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing), each reported 1–6 in 0.5 increments. Always confirm the exact minimum your target university and programme require — some also set per-section floors.

How is the TOEFL iBT scored, and what changes in 2026?

On 21 January 2026, ETS replaced the 0–120 total with a 1–6 band scale (0.5 increments) aligned to the CEFR. The overall band is the average of the four section bands, not a sum. Through January 2028, score reports show both the 1–6 band and a comparable 0–120 score — the calculator above offers both modes.

What TOEFL score equals IELTS 7.0 or 6.5?

Using ETS’s published comparison, a TOEFL iBT overall of 94–101 ≈ IELTS 7.0, 79–93 ≈ IELTS 6.5, and 60–78 ≈ IELTS 6.0. Converting between the two lets you compare requirements when a university lists only one test. See the full TOEFL–IELTS equivalency table above, or estimate the other direction with our IELTS Band Calculator.
