Quick Answer

A CGPA to GPA Calculator converts your CGPA to the US 4.0 GPA scale used by most universities and credential evaluators like WES. For a 10-point CGPA the standard formula is (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4 — so an 8.5 CGPA ≈ 3.4 GPA. This tool also converts between CGPA, percentage, and the 4.0 / 4.33 GPA scales in one step. Always confirm the exact formula your target university accepts.

Understanding CGPA and GPA: Key Differences

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is commonly used in India and several Asian countries, measured on a 10-point scale. GPA (Grade Point Average) is the grading system preferred in the US, Canada, and Europe, usually on a 4.0 scale, though some universities use 4.33, 5.0, or 7.0 scales.

In short: CGPA uses a 10-point scale, GPA uses a 4-point scale. This difference is why CGPA to GPA conversion is crucial for study abroad applications.

CGPA to GPA Conversion Examples

  • Example 1: CGPA 8.5 → (8.5 / 10) × 4 = 3.4 GPA
  • Example 2: CGPA 9.2 → (9.2 / 10) × 4.33 = 3.98 GPA
  • Example 3: GPA 3.5 (4.0 scale) → (3.5 / 4) × 10 = 8.75 CGPA

Common GPA Scales Used Worldwide

  • 4.0 Scale (USA): Most common - 4.0 = A grade.
  • 4.33 Scale (Canada, Hong Kong): Includes A+ distinction.
  • 5.0 Scale (Nigeria, Middle East): Higher range grading.
  • 7.0 Scale (Australia): Distinction and pass mapped on 7 points.

Mistakes to Avoid in GPA Conversion

  • Using the wrong GPA scale — not all universities use 4.0.
  • Rounding too early — Always keep 2 decimal places.
  • Mixing weighted and unweighted GPAs.
  • Ignoring university-specific requirements — some require WES/ECE evaluation.

CGPA to Percentage: Formulas, Table and Examples

How do you convert CGPA to percentage?

To convert CGPA to a percentage, multiply your CGPA by a university-specific factor. This calculator uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10; many Indian boards such as CBSE instead use CGPA × 9.5. For example, an 8.5 CGPA is about 77.5% with the first formula or 80.75% with the second — always use the formula your university or credential evaluator specifies.

CGPA to percentage formulas

There is no single national formula. These are the two you will see most often on Indian marksheets, each shown with the same 8.5 CGPA:

FormulaWhere it comes from8.5 CGPA becomes
(CGPA − 0.75) × 10The formula this calculator uses77.5%
CGPA × 9.5CBSE’s “indicative” percentage for its Class 10 grades (CBSE Circular 24, 28 May 2010)80.75%

The same CGPA can come out several points apart, so quote the percentage your own university states.

Worked examples

  • CGPA 7.8 → (7.8 − 0.75) × 10 = 70.5%, or 7.8 × 9.5 = 74.1%
  • CGPA 9.2 → (9.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 84.5%, or 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%
  • CGPA 6.4 → (6.4 − 0.75) × 10 = 56.5%, or 6.4 × 9.5 = 60.8%

How do you convert percentage to CGPA?

Run the same formula backwards. With the calculator’s formula, CGPA = (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75, so 80% is an 8.75 CGPA. With the CBSE multiplier, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, so 80% is about 8.42.

Which formula should you use?

Use the one your university or board publishes. It is usually printed on the back of your marksheet or grade card, and your university’s exam section can issue a conversion certificate if an application asks for one. When you apply abroad, give your CGPA and its scale exactly as printed; universities and credential evaluators such as WES work from your transcript, not from a formula you apply yourself.

CGPA, GPA & Percentage — Quick Conversions

How is CGPA calculated?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of your grade points across all subjects or semesters. Each subject's grade point is weighted by its credit hours, summed, and divided by the total credits. Your figure for a single semester is the SGPA (Semester GPA); the CGPA is the cumulative average of your SGPAs across the whole programme.

CGPA vs GPA — what's the difference?

CGPA is usually reported on a 10-point scale (common in India), while GPA is the US 4.0 scale. Converting between them lets universities and credential evaluators like WES compare applicants from different grading systems on one common scale.

CGPA to GPA FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is CGPA the same as GPA?
No. CGPA is measured on a 10-point scale, while GPA uses a 4.0 or 4.33 scale. They measure the same concept but on different ranges.
2. Can I submit my CGPA directly to universities?
Some universities accept CGPA directly, but most international institutions require a GPA conversion for fair comparison.
3. Which GPA scale do US universities use?
Most US universities use the 4.0 scale. A few selective institutions also consider the 4.33 weighted scale.
4. Is this CGPA to GPA conversion official?
This calculator provides a highly accurate estimate. Some universities may require a WES or ECE evaluation for official credential recognition.
5. Does converting CGPA to GPA affect admissions?
No — conversion simply standardizes your score so that admissions committees can compare it fairly with applicants from other systems.
6. How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
This calculator uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, so an 8.5 CGPA is 77.5%. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5 for an indicative percentage, which gives 80.75% for the same CGPA. Always use the formula your own university or board publishes.
7. How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Reverse the formula. With (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, CGPA = (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75, so 80% is an 8.75 CGPA. With the CBSE multiplier, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, so 80% is about 8.42.
8. How do I convert percentage to GPA?
This calculator divides your percentage by 100 and multiplies by 4, so 80% is a 3.2 GPA on the 4.0 scale. Universities and credential evaluators such as WES use their own grade tables, so treat this as an estimate.
9. Is there a CGPA system in the US?
Not by that name. US universities report a cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, which is the US counterpart of a CGPA. Indian applicants usually convert their 10-point CGPA to the 4.0 scale, or have it evaluated by a service such as WES.
