GREAT Scholarships for Indians

The British Council offers this scholarship to students who are citizens of India. There are also certain requirements to be eligible for this scholarship. They are as follows:

  • The student should be an Indian citizen and have a passport
  • Should have completed a graduate degree as this scholarship is provided only for a masters degree

Other than this the student should be in contact with the British council and also be alumni of these Scholarships. The student as alumni should talk to the potential candidates about this scholarship and their experience when required.

Hornby Trust Scholarship

This scholarship is specifically aimed at English language teaching teachers who are present outside the United Kingdom. This scholarship is for English language teachers who want to pursue their masters in English language teaching.

This scholarship covers:

  • The tuition fees of the entire course
  • Accommodation expenses
  • Visa expenses
  • Return air tickets
  • Approved language test costs.

In 1961 an educational trust called ‘A.S Hornby Educational Trust’ was established by A.S Hornby. He had a great career in English language teaching and was responsible for the development of the Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary which is published even now as the eighth edition by the Oxford University Press.

A.S Hornby started this scholarship to support the English language teachers and create awareness about it. This scholarship can be availed by senior teachers, trainers, supervisors and writers. 

The students can study with this scholarship at the University of Warwick which is a public university in Coventry, England. It is ranked as the 144 Best Global Universities. This University was established in 1965 and has three faculties namely: arts, science, engineering and medicine. The students can stay as residents in the student housing and it is available for the postgraduate students as well.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • The student should be a citizen of his country
  • A full-time teaching or training requirements for five years and a university degree
  • The student must have a minimum of 6.5 GPA for the English language examinations
  • Must have scored good scores in any one of these tests

Scotland Saltire Scholarship

This scholarship is for students who want to pursue a masters degree in Scotland, United Kingdom. The ‘Scotland Saltire Scholarship’ programme is funded by the Government of Scotland. They provide these scholarships to students who are citizens of Canada, China, India, Pakistan, Japan and the U.S.A. This scholarship is worth £8,000 and will cover the Tuition fees for one year of your master’s program and you can avail of it at whichever year you want to. Chevening Scholarship:

This Scholarship is a United Kingdom government’s scholarship that is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth office and partner organizations.   • Be a citizen of the country where this scholarship is provided
  • Should return to your home country after this scholarship for two years
  • Should have completed an undergraduate degree
  • Have two years of work experience up to 2,800 work hours

Commonwealth Scholarships:

These scholarships are given to promising students who want to make a positive impact on the global level. These scholarships are only available for students who are citizens from the commonwealth nations and refugees who are protected by the British Government. These scholarships are specifically designed for students who cannot afford to study in the UK. This scholarship is valid for students who want to pursue their post-graduate degrees in the United Kingdom. There are also other commonwealth scholarships such as for PhD, masters, medical fellowships, professional fellowships and others.

This scholarship covers your tuition fee, examination fee, airfare fee to come to the United Kingdom and a return ticket to your home country after this scholarship is over. You will also get a stipend of £1,116 – £1,369 if your university is located in the London metropolitan area.

The eligibility for a master degree programme is that

  • Be a citizen of the commonwealth country
  • Should be below forty years
  • Should be a first applicant and not someone who has previously registered

  • A score of 60% in Social Science and 65% in Science

The eligibility for a PhD scholarship is that you should have a masters degree and not be above forty years.

This scholarship is only eligible for students of the United States. This scholarship applies to any field of study in the U.K. Upto fifty scholarships are awarded annually.

Two years Marshall Scholarship

This is applicable for two years (22 months) which can be extended but not beyond the end of the third academic year.

  • For students pursuing a doctorate in Oxford are eligible for a three-year scholarship
  • And the University of Cambridge is eligible for a three-year scholarship

One year Marshall Scholarship

This scholarship is only for 12 months and cannot be extended.

Young Cell Scheme (Kosovo)

The European Union Office in Kosovo and the Ministry of European Integration offer this Young Cell Scheme scholarship which is implemented by the British council. The selected candidates can study in the European Union member states for one year for a range of Master programmes.

This trust is for the Pakistani students to pursue their doctoral degrees and at the fellowship level. This scholarship is not eligible for students who want to pursue their graduate and postgraduate degrees. 

Doctoral students

  • One year of scholarship

Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarships

This is for the Indians who are in their mid-careers to spend time in the UK to achieve their artistic, academic and professional ambitions. This scholarship was established in 1981. This scholarship is for ten months at a university in the UK which can be a one-year postgraduate course. This scholarship covers your accommodation and living costs in the UK. They also provide £600 for international travel costs.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Should be a citizen of India and living in India
  • Age can be between 28-38
  • Have not received this grant within the last five years
  • Should have a degree or diploma or professional qualification in their field.
  • Work experience is required

Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme :

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships for students from developing countries who have less access to finance. These scholarships are awarded as 50% grants and the other 50% as a loan. In this scholarship, priority is given to the students who want to pursue their postgraduate and doctoral studies.

Eligibility and Requirements

Applicants from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Egypt etc are eligible.

Marshall Sherfield Fellowships :

For doctoral studies, this scholarship can be availed for a total of three years.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited  four-year college or university from the United States
  • This scholarship is only applicable to the citizens of America
  • The GPA should be not less than 3.7 in your particular field of study

Newton Fund PhD scholarships

They offer PhD scholarships for students to study in the UK.  They accept students from outside the UK who plan to come to the UK to get PhD grants.
