In June 2026, Michael O’Sullivan of University College Cork joined a Galvanize webinar to walk Indian applicants through studying at UCC: the master’s programmes international students choose, what UCC asks of Indian applicants, scholarships and costs, and what careers in Ireland look like afterwards. The full recording is below, and this page sets out what the session covered.
If you are weighing Ireland against Germany or the UK for a master’s, this is one of the few sessions where the university’s own international team answers Indian students’ questions directly. Our guide to studying in Ireland covers the country-level picture, and who a master’s in Ireland suits covers fit; this page stays with UCC.
Michael O’Sullivan works in UCC’s global office, where he leads the university’s international recruitment and its global partner network. He is a UCC graduate and has more than 15 years’ experience across international education and industry. A second speaker, Niall of ETS, covered the TOEFL test.
What did the UCC webinar cover?
The session ran for 1 hour 9 minutes: about 20 minutes on UCC, then the TOEFL segment, then questions from students. Jump to a part:

What does University College Cork ask of Indian applicants?
UCC sets master’s entry against two Irish honours grades, a 2H1 or a 2H2, and each programme uses one of them. Michael O’Sullivan put a 2H1 at about 65% in an Indian bachelor’s degree, for in-demand programmes such as corporate finance, and a 2H2 at about 55%, for programmes such as management and marketing. Where an applicant’s marks fall short, UCC will look at relevant work experience, usually at least three years, though some programmes accept only the grade. There is one intake a year, in September. Applications for September 2027 open in October 2026, and offers usually come back within three to five weeks.
The application fee is €50 and covers two programmes, each read by both the admissions team and the academics. Send only the documents the portal asks for, which he said gets a faster decision. Watch this part from 16:56
Which UCC master’s programmes do international students choose?
UCC has more than 200 programmes across four colleges: arts and humanities, business and law, medicine and health, and science and engineering. The ones that draw the most international students, in Michael O’Sullivan’s words, are finance, management, marketing, business information systems and business analytics in the business school; pharmacy, nursing and public health in health; and data science, computing, engineering and food science in science. UCC also hosts Insight, Ireland’s national research centre for data science and AI, and the Tyndall institute for photonics and nanotechnology.
Many UCC master’s are conversion programmes, built for graduates changing field: an engineer can move into the business school, and a business graduate into computing or food science. Each programme page says whether it is a conversion programme. Watch this part from 15:12
What scholarships and costs should you plan for at UCC?
Tuition for about nine in ten UCC programmes falls between €17,000 and €25,000, Michael O’Sullivan said, and living in Cork costs €12,000 to €17,000 a year. Postgraduate applicants with a first-class equivalent, usually above 75%, get a 20% reduction on their fees, and every international undergraduate gets €2,000 off. Both are automatic, with no separate application. His advice on housing: when you pay the deposit for your programme, reserve accommodation at the same time. The offer letter links to university, private and shared options, all within about 15 minutes’ walk of campus. Watch this part from 20:50
These are the figures given in June 2026. Check the course page for the fee in the year you apply.
What do careers look like after studying at UCC?
UCC’s most recent count had 94% of its undergraduates in work or further study nine months after graduating. Cork is home to European headquarters for Apple, which employs about 6,000 people there across tech, finance and customer service, and for Dell, along with clusters in pharma, cybersecurity, energy and financial services. The careers service runs two large recruitment fairs a year, in autumn and spring, and workshops on CVs, interviews and presentations. Michael O’Sullivan’s point: an interview in Ireland for a multinational is not the same as one in India for the same company. After a postgraduate degree, you can stay in Ireland for two years to work. Watch this part from 22:58
Which English tests does UCC accept?
Niall of ETS said every university in Ireland accepts TOEFL. The test now takes about two hours and covers reading, listening, speaking and writing, in the format updated in January 2026. You can register as late as two days before a test date and retake it after three days. Reading and listening scores appear straight away, and full results can arrive in three days. MyBest scores show universities your best section scores across attempts. On the at-home test, he said UCC accepted it last year for undergraduates and was reviewing it for the coming year, so check UCC’s current requirements before booking. Watch this part from 29:28
Our TOEFL preparation page covers the test itself, and current discount codes are on the TOEFL voucher code page, kept current because codes and their country rules change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which UCC master's programmes suit computer science and AI graduates?
UCC’s School of Computer Science runs three main master’s streams: computing science, data science and artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The computing science master’s expects a computer science degree, or one with at least half its content in computer science.
Should I choose Ireland or Germany for a master's in CS or AI?
Michael O’Sullivan called Germany a good place to study. His case for Ireland was that you study and work in English, you reach English-speaking markets, and many large multinationals have made Ireland their European headquarters.
How do PhD applications and supervisor contact work at UCC?
Find a supervisor first. UCC’s PhD page lists academics by discipline, and you email one with your proposed research. Funding is agreed with the supervisor and can come from UCC, your home government, another organisation, or yourself.
Can I switch into data science, AI or cybersecurity at master's level?
Yes. The data science and AI master’s and the cybersecurity master’s take numerate graduates from engineering, physics and maths, with about 65% in the bachelor’s degree. The computing science master’s is the one that needs a computer science background.
Should I choose a taught or a research master's?
A taught master’s follows a full-year curriculum. A research master’s is mostly research on one topic and is often a step towards a PhD. Both lead to employment, though in Michael O’Sullivan’s experience many research master’s graduates go on to further research.
What makes an application to UCC stand out beyond scores?
Entry is purely academic: UCC judges the percentage or GPA. Where marks are borderline, some programmes weigh relevant work experience, usually at least three years. Once at UCC, the students who do best join clubs and societies, volunteer, and build a network beyond their course.
What are conversion programmes, and who are they for?
They are master’s programmes for graduates changing field, for example an engineer moving into business, or a business graduate moving into computing or food science. Each UCC programme page says whether it is a conversion programme.
What entry requirement does UCC set for Indian degrees?
Each master’s asks for either a 2H1, about 65% in an Indian bachelor’s degree, or a 2H2, about 55%. Corporate finance was the 2H1 example given in the June 2026 session, and management and marketing the 2H2 example.
Does UCC accept TOEFL?
Yes. ETS said in the session that every university in Ireland accepts TOEFL. The at-home test was accepted at UCC for undergraduates last year and was under review for the coming year, so check UCC’s current requirements before booking it.
What does a year at UCC cost, and are any scholarships automatic?
Tuition on about nine in ten UCC programmes runs from €17,000 to €25,000, and living in Cork costs €12,000 to €17,000 a year. A first-class equivalent, usually above 75%, earns an automatic 20% fee reduction, with no separate application. These are the June 2026 figures.
Can I stay and work in Ireland after a UCC master's?
After a postgraduate degree you can stay in Ireland for two years to work. Cork holds Apple’s European headquarters, employing about 6,000 people, and Dell’s, alongside pharma, cybersecurity, energy and financial services clusters. UCC’s most recent count had 94% of undergraduates in work or further study nine months out.
When should I arrange accommodation at UCC?
Reserve accommodation at the same time as you pay your programme deposit, Michael O’Sullivan advised. The offer letter links to university, private and shared options, all within about 15 minutes’ walk of campus. Leaving it until later narrows what is left.
