In May 2026, Anju Singh of the University of Galway joined a Galvanize webinar to take Indian applicants through studying at Galway: its programmes, entry requirements, scholarships, accommodation and careers in Ireland. A second speaker from ETS covered the TOEFL test. The full recording is below, and this page sets out what the session covered.
Galway is on Ireland’s west coast and is one of the country’s main university cities. Our guide to studying in Ireland covers the country-level picture, and who a master’s in Ireland suits covers fit; this page stays with the University of Galway.
Anju Singh is Senior Regional Manager – South Asia at the University of Galway, with more than 25 years in international higher education. The TOEFL segment was presented by Niall of ETS, who works on TOEFL in Ireland and previously worked at the University of Galway.

What does the University of Galway ask of Indian applicants?
Galway’s entry requirement for Indian degrees runs from 55% to 75%, depending on the programme. Anju Singh gave three examples: about 75% for computer science, 65% for most business programmes, and 55% for some hotel management degrees. Graduates of top-ranked Indian universities can be considered with slightly lower marks. Computer science needs a four-year BTech or BE. Business programmes accept three-year degrees, so a BCA graduate would apply to the business school rather than to an engineering or coding degree.
There is one intake a year, in September, and applications for September 2027 open on 1 October 2026. The application fee is €35, cannot be waived, and covers two programmes. You send your mark sheets, degree certificate, and a letter of recommendation or an SOP. Watch this part from 21:07
Which programmes do international students choose at Galway?
Galway has four colleges, with more than 70 undergraduate and 170 postgraduate degrees. Anju Singh named the MSc in Business Analytics as the university’s most popular degree, followed by international management, information systems management, cybersecurity, risk management and fintech. In science and engineering, Indian students choose computer science, health data science, electronic and computer engineering, biotechnology and biomedical science. The one-year biotechnology and biomedical science MSc programmes can add a year of industry placement for students who perform well. Most master’s run over three trimesters, and the third is an internship, a research thesis or a consultancy project with a company.
In health, some programmes are online only, so check the delivery mode on the programme page. In law, alongside the general LLM, Indian applicants choose international and comparative disability law, and business law. Watch this part from 12:44
What scholarships and costs should you plan for at Galway?
All of Galway’s scholarships are merit-based. Most computer science and engineering programmes give an automatic €2,000 scholarship. On a €28,000 fee, for example, you pay €26,000. Excellence scholarships of €10,000 go to high performers, around 85% or a 9 CGPA and above, and are decided late in the cycle, once all applications are in. Galway also runs five TOEFL scholarships of up to one lakh rupees with ETS, and was the first university in Ireland to sign such an agreement. For a PhD, the Hardiman scholarship pays a stipend of €25,000 a year.
Galway has more than 2,000 rooms, from Corrib Village, the cheapest, to the en-suite Goldcrest apartments and the new Dunlin Village. Anju Singh put living costs in Galway at 35 to 40% below Dublin’s. Her timing advice: apply between October and December, because places are limited and scholarship decisions follow the offer. What do careers look like after studying at Galway?
Galway reported 96% employment for its postgraduates and 98% for undergraduates. Anju Singh credited that partly to its global employability team, which works specifically with international students. More than 400 companies come to the university to meet students. Galway is a medtech hub with more than 80 medtech companies, and HP, SAP, Fidelity, Apple, IBM, Oracle, Cisco and Boston Scientific all have a base there. After a one-year master’s, you can stay in Ireland for two years to look for work, and longer with an employer’s sponsorship. While studying in Ireland, you can work 20 hours a week in term and 40 hours a week in the holidays. Watch this part from 24:48
What TOEFL score does the University of Galway ask for?
Asked what score is competitive for top Irish universities, Niall of ETS said Galway generally looks for 3.5 to 4 on TOEFL’s new 1–6 band scale. Medicine-related programmes and speech and language therapy ask for more. Reading Galway’s updated requirements during the session, he pointed to about 4 to 4.5 for the at-home and test-centre versions alike, so treat the programme page as the final word. Galway also accepts IELTS and PTE, but not Duolingo, and can waive the English test for applicants who meet a set percentage. Watch this part from 1:06:10
Our TOEFL preparation page covers the test itself, and current discount codes are on the TOEFL voucher code page. The code offered during the recording is not repeated here, because codes and their country rules change.
