GRE Results 2026: How to Check, Send and Understand Your Scores

GRE Results: How to Check & Send Scores — a student writing in a notebook at a desk beside an open laptop

Key Takeaways

  • Unofficial Verbal and Quantitative scores show on screen right after the test; official scores, including Analytical Writing, reach your ETS account 8 to 10 days later.
  • You check your results by signing in to your ETS account and opening your Test-taker Score Report, which you can print.
  • On test day you can send scores free to up to 4 institutions through ScoreSelect; after that, each Additional Score Report costs US$40.
  • Universities see only the scores you choose to send, not your other test dates or other recipients.
  • GRE scores are reportable for five years, and an Analytical Writing score review costs US$60 if requested within 90 days.

You check your GRE results in your ETS account. If you choose to report your scores at the end of the test, you see unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores on screen straight away. Official scores for all three measures, including Analytical Writing, reach your ETS account 8 to 10 days after your test date.

The timings, sending rules and fees on this page come from ETS’s getting your scores and sending your scores pages and the GRE Information Bulletin 2026–27, checked 26 October 2026. We re-check them every quarter.

When do GRE scores come out?

At the end of the test you decide whether to report or cancel your scores. Once you view them, you cannot cancel them, and you cannot cancel one section and keep the others. If you report them, ETS shows you unofficial Verbal and Quantitative scores before you leave. Analytical Writing is not shown then, because the essay is scored afterwards.

How do I check my GRE results?

  1. Wait for the ETS email telling you your official scores are ready, 8 to 10 days after the test.
  2. Sign in to your ETS account, the same one you used to register.
  3. Open your official Test-taker Score Report. It is for your own records; you can print a paper copy from your account.

The report shows your contact details, date of birth, gender and intended graduate major, your test dates, your scores with their percentile ranks, the institutions you have authorised to receive your scores, and a record of the scores you have reported in the last five years.

Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130 to 170 in one-point steps, and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6 in half-point steps. If you answer no questions in a measure, you get No Score (NS) for it. To see what your numbers mean against other test takers, use our GRE score calculator.

How do I send my GRE scores to universities?

ETS uses a system called ScoreSelect, and when you send your scores matters:

When you sendRecipientsWhich scores you can sendCost
On test day, after seeing your scoresUp to 4 institutions or fellowship sponsorsMost Recent, or All from the last 5 yearsIncluded in the test fee
After test day, or more than 4 recipientsAny number, one Additional Score Report eachMost Recent, All, or Any test dates you pick from the last 5 yearsUS$40 per recipient

An Additional Score Report takes about five business days to process, and ETS says an order cannot be cancelled, changed or refunded once you submit it, so check the recipient before you pay. Some programmes ask applicants who have taken the GRE more than once to send every score, so check each programme’s rule before you choose.

What do universities see on my GRE score report?

The institution report shows your contact details, your intended graduate major, and the test dates and scores you chose to send, with percentile ranks. It does not show the other institutions you sent scores to, any scores you chose not to report, or that you took other GRE tests. Institutions can also see your test-day photo and your Analytical Writing essays for the test dates you send.

How long are GRE scores valid?

Five years. ETS says GRE scores are reportable for five years after your test date, so a test taken on 26 October 2026 can be reported until 25 October 2031. Our GRE score validity guide covers how universities treat older scores.

Can I get my GRE Analytical Writing score reviewed?

Yes. ETS offers a paid Score Review for the Analytical Writing measure. You request it in your ETS account for US$60, and ETS must receive the request within 90 days of your test. Allow about four weeks for the result. You cannot send your scores to anyone while the review is in progress, and the new score can be higher or lower than the old one.

The free GRE Diagnostic Service is separate: it shows the types of Verbal and Quantitative questions you got right and wrong, their difficulty and the time you spent on each.

What should I do if my GRE score is below my target?

You can retake the General Test once every 21 days, up to five times in any 12 months, and ScoreSelect lets you send only the attempt you want. Take our free GRE mock test to see which section to work on first. When you book again from India, a GRE registration voucher lowers the cost of the retake. If you are unsure whether your score is enough for your shortlist, our admission counselling team can check it against the programmes you are applying to.
