Heriot Watt University Scotland: What International Students Need to Know

Heriot-Watt is one of the few UK universities where reading the institutional ranking will actively mislead you. It sits at 325th in the world and 31st in the UK, which places it in the middle of a crowded field and tells you almost nothing useful. Look at the subject tables instead and it is eighth in the world for petroleum engineering.

That gap is not an accident, and it is the whole argument for and against the university. Heriot-Watt is a specialist that happens to be organised as a university, and whether it is right for you depends almost entirely on whether your subject is one of the ones it does exceptionally. What follows is how to apply, what Edinburgh actually costs, and where the draft numbers circulating about this university are wrong.

What has changed about staying on after the degree?

This affects the return on the degree more than anything about the university, so it goes first. GOV.UK states that a Graduate visa lasts:

It is not a flat two years. You apply after finishing, so a one-year master’s starting in September 2026 completes in late 2027 and falls in the 18-month band. For an engineering or energy master’s this cuts both ways. The window to convert the degree into UK work is shorter, but the roles Heriot-Watt graduates target tend to sit above the Skilled Worker salary threshold rather than at the margin of it, which makes the switch more achievable than it is from a general degree.

Where does Heriot-Watt actually rank, and which table should you read?

The subject one. This is the single most important thing to understand about this university, and the institutional tables will talk you out of an application you should make.

On the university’s own rankings page, Heriot-Watt records 31st in the UK and fifth in Scotland in the Complete University Guide 2027. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 it is 325th globally, 36th in the UK and sixth in Scotland. Respectable, unremarkable, and not a reason to choose it.

The subject positions are a different university altogether. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, Heriot-Watt is eighth in the world for petroleum engineering, up seven places, and inside the world top 200 for six subjects including chemical, civil and electrical engineering and mathematics. Domestically the Complete University Guide 2027 places it fourth in the UK for building and seventh for town and country planning.

That last row is the underrated one. Facilities spending is a dull-sounding metric that matters enormously for a laboratory-based degree, because it is the difference between reading about equipment and using it. For a chemical or mechanical engineering student it is a better predictor of the experience than any overall position.

The research picture is consistent with this. Heriot-Watt states that 86.8% of its research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in REF 2021, with the strength concentrated in physics, mathematical sciences, engineering, and architecture and the built environment — the same list as the subject tables, which is what a genuine specialism looks like from two directions.

The conclusion is uncomfortable but clear. If your subject is on that list, the institutional ranking understates what you are getting. If it is not, there is no argument for choosing Heriot-Watt over a better-placed university, and the marketing will not tell you which category you are in.

How do international students apply?

Undergraduate applications go through UCAS with the relevant Heriot-Watt course code, supported by predicted or achieved Class 12 results, one academic reference and a personal statement shared across all five of your choices.

Taught master’s applications go directly through the university’s own portal, with transcripts, a degree certificate or provisional statement, a CV and references. Subject prerequisites are enforced more strictly here than at a general university: data science and petroleum engineering both expect specific prior study, and competitive programmes look for around 60% and above from an Indian bachelor’s degree.

The practical advice for this university is unglamorous. What English scores does Heriot-Watt want?

IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and other recognised tests are accepted, with most undergraduate and postgraduate courses asking for IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, and competitive programmes asking for 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band. PTE equivalents fall in the mid-to-high 50s and 60s.

Waivers exist for candidates who studied in English-medium institutions, but they are confirmed by admissions case by case and should never be assumed. What does Edinburgh cost?

Less than London, more than most of the rest of Scotland, and the campus location changes the answer more than people expect.

Fees sit on each course page for the relevant year of entry rather than as a single international rate, which is standard across the UK sector now. Take your figure from your own course page rather than from a range quoted second-hand, including here.

On living costs, the Riccarton campus sits outside the city centre, which pulls rent down and pushes commuting up. The trade-off is real either way: a room near campus is cheaper and quieter, a room in town costs more and puts you in the city. For the visa, GOV.UK requires proof of £1,171 per month for up to nine months for a course outside London, held for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your application. Edinburgh is outside London for this purpose. Guidance quoting £1,023 is out of date, and it is still widely repeated — check the figure on GOV.UK on the day you assemble your bank statements rather than trusting any guide, this one included.

How does accommodation work?

Heriot-Watt generally guarantees accommodation to new international students who apply by the stated deadline, which is a genuine advantage over universities that run a lottery. On-campus halls at Riccarton offer en-suite and standard rooms, with undergraduate contracts commonly running 38 to 40 weeks and postgraduate lengths varying by programme.

If you miss the guarantee deadline, the university housing service points at the private market, and neighbourhoods such as Gorgie, Slateford and Sighthill sit between the campus and the city at lower rents than the centre. What scholarships exist?

Partial ones. Heriot-Watt runs merit-based, country-specific and subject awards rather than full funding, and the realistic outcome for a strong Indian applicant is a reduction rather than a transformation of the bill.

What is student life at Riccarton actually like?

Contained, green, and further from the city than the marketing photographs suggest. The campus has its own accommodation, sports facilities and library, and Edinburgh is a bus ride away rather than out the front door.

Buses are the default: Lothian Buses with a student Ridacard covers unlimited local travel, trams handle the airport and central routes, and ScotRail reaches Glasgow and beyond. Budget for regular travel rather than treating it as occasional, because a campus outside the centre means the cost is structural.

Registering with a GP is straightforward once you have a UK address and have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge: choose a nearby practice, complete the GMS1 form, and provide your passport and proof of address. What work rights do you have?

Degree-level students are generally permitted term-time work of up to 20 hours a week, with more permitted outside term, though the exact condition is stated on your own visa and varies by course and provider. Read yours rather than a general guide.

For a technical degree the more valuable use of that time is usually a placement or an industry project rather than paid hours in retail. So is Heriot-Watt worth it?

It is, if your subject is one of the ones it does exceptionally — petroleum, chemical, civil, mechanical or electrical engineering, the built environment, mathematics, or the energy and data programmes built around them. On that profile you are getting a world top-200 subject department, first-in-Scotland facilities spending and a guaranteed room, at a mid-table university’s price. Very few UK universities offer that trade.

It is not, if you are choosing it as a general Scottish university. For that, Glasgow is Russell Group and better placed on every institutional table, and Manchester offers more subject depth across the board if you are willing to leave Scotland.
