IELTS Results Guide — a student raising her hands in excitement at her laptop

Key Takeaways

  • In India, IELTS on computer and IELTS (Writing on Paper) results come out 1 to 2 days after the test; IELTS for UKVI on paper takes 13 days (IDP IELTS India).
  • Check your result in your IDP candidate account under Declared Result, or through the email link if you booked with the British Council.
  • Your Test Report Form shows a 1 to 9 band for each skill and an overall band; in India it is issued as an electronic TRF (eTRF).
  • Sending scores is free up to a limit: IELTS.org says e-delivery is unlimited, IDP India's portal allows five free electronic reports, and paper TRFs go free to up to five organisations.
  • Not happy with a band? Request a remark within six weeks, or retake one skill within 60 days if your full test was IELTS on computer.

In India, IELTS results come out 1 to 2 days after the test if you take IELTS on computer or the new IELTS (Writing on Paper), according to IDP IELTS India. You check them online with your candidate details, download the electronic Test Report Form (eTRF), and send it to universities through the booking portal.

The timings and rules on this page come from IDP IELTS India and IELTS.org, checked 28 October 2026. We re-check them every quarter.

When do IELTS results come out?

How long you wait depends on the test you take. IDP IELTS India publishes these timings for India:

Test typeResults in India
IELTS on computer1 to 2 days after the test
IELTS (Writing on Paper): Listening and Reading on computer, Writing by hand1 to 2 days after the test
IELTS for UKVI (paper)13 days after the test
IELTS Life Skills7 days after the test

IDP India says the fully paper-based IELTS has been discontinued and replaced by IELTS (Writing on Paper), which gives results as fast as the computer test. Its results page still lists 7 days for IELTS on paper, which applies only if you took the older paper test.

Outside India the window is a little wider. IELTS.org gives 1 to 5 days for IELTS on computer and for IELTS for UKVI, 6 to 8 days for IELTS Online, and up to 9 days for IELTS for UKVI Life Skills. If you have a university or visa deadline, book a computer-delivered test.

How do I check my IELTS result online?

Where you check depends on who you booked with:

  • Booked through IDP: sign in to your IDP IELTS candidate account. Your scores appear under “Declared Result”, and you can download your eTRF from the same place.
  • Booked through the British Council: you get an email with a link to view your scores.
  • Took the test in the USA: you get an email with a link to your IELTS USA account.

IELTS.org says you need the passport or ID number you registered with, and your candidate number, to see your results online, so keep both handy.

What is on the IELTS Test Report Form?

The Test Report Form (TRF) is your official result. It shows a band score from 1 to 9 for each of the four skills, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and an overall band, which is the average of the four. In India you get it as an electronic TRF (eTRF) from the candidate portal; IDP India says physical TRFs are now rarely issued. You get one copy, or two if you are applying to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Extra copies, called Additional TRFs, are available from your test centre for an administration fee.

Our IELTS band score calculator works out your overall band from the four section scores, so you can see how much a stronger result in one skill would lift it. Our guide to IELTS band scores explains what each band means.

How do I send my IELTS score to universities?

You send scores through the booking portal or your test centre. Each university or visa office says which method it accepts:

MethodHow many organisationsCost
Electronic (IELTS Results Service e-delivery)As many as you like (IELTS.org); five free through the IDP India portal, with more on request (IDP IELTS India)Free up to those limits
Paper TRF by postUp to fiveFree; a processing fee applies after five

Source: IELTS.org, Getting and sharing your results, and IDP IELTS India, both checked 28 October 2026.

The two sources differ on electronic sending. If you booked with IDP in India, follow the limit your IDP portal shows. Electronic results reach the organisation straight away, while IDP India says paper requests can take 7 to 10 working days. Ask each organisation which method it uses, and confirm its e-delivery account name or postal address before you send. IELTS Online results can only be shared electronically.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

Two years. The IELTS partners recommend that organisations treat a result as proof of your English for a maximum of two years, and accept an older Test Report Form only with evidence that you have kept up or improved your English. Some universities and visa bodies set a shorter limit, so check the requirement on the course or visa page you are applying to.

What if I am not happy with my IELTS band?

If a band comes in below what you need, you have three options:

  1. Request a remark (Enquiry on Results). In India you apply online from your IDP candidate login, within six weeks of your test date. There is a fee, which IELTS.org says is fully refunded if your band score changes. Our IELTS exam fee guide lists the current charges.
  2. Retake one skill. If your full test was IELTS on computer, IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit one skill, once per test, within 60 days, at centres that offer it. You get a new TRF and can choose which one to use. Not every organisation accepts One Skill Retake results, so check first.
  3. Take the full test again. There is no limit on how many times you can sit IELTS.

Before you pay for a retake, find out which skill cost you the band. Take our free IELTS mock test to see where you stand on each section, then put your practice where it moves the overall band most. If you are unsure whether your band is enough for your shortlist, our admission counselling team can check it against the courses you are applying to.
