Key Takeaways

IELTS is not a pass-or-fail test, so how hard it is depends on the band you need. The higher your target, and the more skills it applies to, the harder it gets. For Indian test takers, the official data is clear on one point: Writing is the hardest section and Reading is the easiest.
This guide uses IELTS’s own 2024–2025 test taker data to show how Indian candidates actually score in each section, explains what makes each section hard, and shows how many correct answers each band needs.
How do Indian test takers score in each IELTS section?
IELTS publishes the average band score by nationality every year. These are the figures for test takers from India in 2024–2025, from the IELTS test statistics page (test taker performance data, rounded to two decimals):
| Section | IELTS Academic (India) | IELTS General Training (India) |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 6.41 | 6.23 |
| Reading | 6.94 | 6.92 |
| Writing | 6.24 | 6.19 |
| Speaking | 6.47 | 6.39 |
| Overall | 6.58 | 6.50 |
Two things stand out. Writing is the lowest-scoring section in both versions of the test, and Reading is the highest by a wide margin. If you need 7.0 in every skill, Writing is the section most likely to hold you back.
The pattern is not unique to India. In the same data, Writing is the lowest-scoring skill for both female and male IELTS Academic test takers worldwide.
Is there a pass mark in IELTS?
No. IELTS gives a band score from 0 to 9 for each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and an overall band that is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band (IELTS scoring in detail). Universities, employers and visa authorities each set the band they need, often with a minimum in every skill. So the real question is how hard it is to reach your target. Our guide to IELTS band scores explains what each band means.
Why is IELTS Writing the hardest section?
- Two tasks in 60 minutes. Task 1 needs at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250 words. Running out of time on Task 2 is common.
- Task 2 counts for more. IELTS says the assessment of Task 2 carries more weight in marking than Task 1, so a weak essay pulls the band down more than a weak Task 1.
- Four criteria, weighted equally. Examiners score task response (or task achievement), coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. A strong vocabulary cannot make up for an answer that does not address the question.
- No right answers to memorise. Unlike Listening and Reading, there is no answer key.
Our IELTS Writing tips cover how to plan both tasks within the hour.
How hard are Listening, Reading and Speaking?
| Section | Format (IELTS Academic) | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 4 parts, 40 questions, about 30 minutes | You hear each recording once, in a range of accents, and spelling mistakes cost marks. |
| Reading | 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes | Long texts and tight time; True/False/Not Given questions catch readers who rely on their own knowledge. |
| Writing | 2 tasks, 60 minutes | Covered above: two tasks, equal criteria, Task 2 weighted more. |
| Speaking | 3 parts, 11–14 minutes, face to face with an examiner | Part 2 asks you to speak for up to two minutes on a topic after one minute of preparation. |
Timings are from the IELTS Academic test page. For section-by-section practice advice, see our tips for Listening, Reading and Speaking.
How many correct answers do you need for band 6, 7 or 8?
Listening and Reading are marked out of 40, and the raw score is converted to a band. IELTS publishes the average number of marks needed for some bands (IELTS scoring in detail); the exact number varies slightly between test versions.
| Band | Listening | Academic Reading | General Training Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 16 of 40 | 15 of 40 | 23 of 40 |
| 6 | 23 of 40 | 23 of 40 | 30 of 40 |
| 7 | 30 of 40 | 30 of 40 | 35 of 40 |
| 8 | 35 of 40 | 35 of 40 | Not published |
So a band 7 in Listening or Academic Reading means about three answers in every four correct. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band, because its texts are easier. Our IELTS band calculator turns your section scores into an overall band.
Is IELTS General Training easier than Academic?
Listening and Speaking are the same in both versions. Reading and Writing differ: General Training uses everyday texts and a letter for Writing Task 1, while Academic uses longer, more formal texts and a graph or diagram. The scoring makes up for this, as the table above shows. You should take the version your university or visa asks for, not the one you think is easier. Our guide to IELTS Academic vs General Training explains which one you need.
How do you make IELTS easier for yourself?
- Start with your target, not the test. Find the band, and any minimum per skill, that your university or visa needs. That tells you how far you have to go.
- Take a full timed mock first. It shows which section is furthest from your target. For most Indian test takers that will be Writing.
- Get feedback on your writing. Writing has no answer key, so practise against the four criteria and have someone mark your essays against them.
- Practise under real timing. Listening plays each recording once and Reading gives one hour for 40 questions, so timing is part of the test, not just the English.
