PTE Core vs PTE Academic: Which One Do You Need?

PTE Core vs PTE Academic — a student pointing at a line in an open textbook, with glasses, pens and sticky notes on the desk

Key Takeaways

  • Book PTE Core for Canadian permanent residency, citizenship or a post-graduation work permit. Book PTE Academic for university admission, including in Canada, and for Australian or New Zealand visas.
  • IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic, for Express Entry. A PTE Academic score cannot be used for a Canada PR profile, however high it is.
  • Both tests take about two hours and score 10 to 90, but Core tests everyday and workplace English: Write Email replaces Write Essay, and the lecture-retelling tasks are gone.
  • IRCC converts PTE Core scores to CLB levels skill by skill. CLB 7, the Federal Skilled Worker minimum, needs at least 68 Speaking, 60 Listening, 60 Reading and 69 Writing.
  • In India all three PTE formats cost ₹18,900 including tax, so choose on who accepts the score, and check the test name on your booking before you pay.

Book PTE Core if you are applying for Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry or another economic programme, for Canadian citizenship, or for a post-graduation work permit. Book PTE Academic if you are applying to a university or college, including one in Canada, or for an Australian or New Zealand visa. One test’s score cannot stand in for the other.

On paper the two look almost identical: two-hour, computer-based, four-skill tests scored on a 10–90 scale, at the same price in India. What separates them is who accepts the score and what the questions are about — everyday and workplace English in Core, the English of lectures and essays in Academic.

If you have already decided on PTE Academic, our PTE exam pattern guide covers that test section by section. This post covers the choice between the two, and what changes if you pick Core.

What is the difference between PTE Core and PTE Academic?

Pearson puts it plainly on its PTE Core page: “if you want to apply for a migration visa in Canada, choose PTE Core. If you wish to study in Canada, choose PTE Academic.” The same page describes PTE Core as a general English test built on language “used everyday in a workplace or community”, while PTE Academic’s questions “reflect language you might hear in an academic setting”.

Which PTE test does IRCC accept for Express Entry?

Only PTE Core. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s Express Entry language testing page approves three English tests — CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core — and for Pearson it says: “You must take the PTE Core option.” PTE Academic does not appear on the list, so a PTE Academic score will not count for an Express Entry profile, however high it is.

This is the costliest mistake on this topic: a PTE Academic score taken for a university application does not carry into a PR application. Two more IRCC points before you book:

  • The two-year window is checked twice. IRCC says your results must be less than two years old both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. An application with expired results is refused, so time the test with that in mind.
  • The post-graduation work permit uses the same list. IRCC’s PGWP documents page lists CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English, and says “You should take the PTE Core option.” PTE Academic is not listed there either.

Pearson also states that PTE Core is accepted by IRCC as proof of English for Canadian citizenship applications.

Which test do you need to study in Canada, Australia or the UK?

For a degree or diploma, PTE Academic. Pearson’s own advice on the PTE Core page is that “if you plan to apply to a Canadian university or college, you’ll need PTE Academic instead of PTE Core.” Universities set their own minimum scores, so check each programme’s page; Pearson’s PTE Academic scoring page gives a typical postgraduate minimum of 57–67 as a rough guide.

Beyond Canada, the same scoring page says PTE Academic is accepted for visa and immigration applications in Australia and New Zealand, and notes that the Australian Department of Home Affairs has recently changed its PTE score requirements. For an Australian visa, read the current requirement on the Home Affairs website, not an older score table. Our guide to countries that accept PTE goes through the main destinations.

The UK has a third variant. Pearson says PTE Academic UKVI is the version accepted for UK work visas and for study below degree level. It follows the PTE Academic format but is booked separately.

How are the two test formats different?

Both tests run in three parts in the same order. The table below lists the question types in each part, taken from Pearson’s test-format pages for PTE Core and PTE Academic.

PartPTE CorePTE Academic
Speaking & Writing50–65 minutes, 7 types: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Respond to a Situation, Answer Short Question, Summarize Written Text, Write Email76–84 minutes, 9 types: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarize Group Discussion, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay
Reading27–37 minutes, 5 types: Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers), Reorder Paragraphs, Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (Single Answer)23–30 minutes, 5 types: Fill in the Blanks (Dropdown), Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers), Reorder Paragraphs, Fill in the Blanks (Drag and Drop), Multiple Choice (Single Answer)
Listening22–37 minutes, 7 types: Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers), Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (Single Answer), Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words, Write from Dictation31–39 minutes, 8 types: the same seven plus Highlight Correct Summary

Most task names match. The real differences sit in four places:

  • Write Email replaces Write Essay. In PTE Core you read a prompt of up to 100 words and write an email of 80–120 words in 9 minutes. In PTE Academic you write a 200–300 word argumentative essay in 20 minutes. The email is shorter but must fit its reader, purpose and tone.
  • Core drops the two lecture-style speaking tasks. Retell Lecture and Summarize Group Discussion, where you summarise an academic talk or a three-person discussion aloud, appear only in PTE Academic.
  • Listening has one fewer task. Highlight Correct Summary is in PTE Academic only.
  • The topics differ throughout. Core material comes from work and daily life; Academic material from study.

Respond to a Situation is in both: you listen to and read a short everyday situation of up to 60 words and give a spoken answer in 40 seconds.

How do PTE Core scores convert to CLB levels?

IRCC does not ask for a PTE score as such. It asks for a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level in each of the four skills, and publishes the conversion on its Express Entry language test results page (page dated 16 October 2026):

CLB levelSpeakingListeningReadingWriting
10 and above89+89+88+90
984–8882–8878–8788–89
876–8371–8169–7779–87
768–7560–7060–6869–78
659–6750–5951–5960–68
551–5839–4942–5051–59
442–5028–3833–4141–50

The bands are not the same width in every skill. CLB 7 needs 68 in Speaking but only 60 in Listening and Reading, and 69 in Writing. Pearson’s PTE Core scoring page publishes the same alignment.

What level you need depends on the programme. On the same IRCC page, the Federal Skilled Worker Program asks for CLB 7 in all four abilities in your first official language. The Canadian Experience Class asks for CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3. These are eligibility minimums; a higher CLB earns more Express Entry ranking points.

The CLB table applies to PTE Core only. To compare a PTE Academic score with IELTS bands instead, use our PTE score chart, which follows Pearson’s published concordance.

Is PTE Core easier than PTE Academic?

Pearson does not say so, and there is no official way to compare difficulty across the two. The content asks for different things: if you handle English about work, housing and services well but find lectures and argumentative essays hard going, PTE Core plays to your strengths. Its Speaking & Writing part is also shorter, with no lecture retelling. But difficulty should never decide it. For Express Entry, PTE Academic is not an option at all; for a university, PTE Core is the wrong test.

What if you plan to study in Canada now and apply for PR later?

Then you will most likely take both, at different times. The university application needs PTE Academic; the post-graduation work permit and, later, permanent residence need PTE Core, CELPIP-General or IELTS General Training. Scores last two years, so plan the second test for the year you expect to create your Express Entry profile.

How do you book the right PTE test?

You choose the test type when you book in your myPTE account: PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Core. Check the test name on your confirmation before you pay. Our PTE registration guide walks through the booking steps.

In India the fee is the same for all three: ₹18,900, inclusive of tax. That figure was confirmed by our Pearson relationship manager with effect from 16 March 2026; Pearson shows prices only through the price finder on its test centres and fees page, and the checkout total is the authority if the two ever differ. Our post on the PTE exam fee in India explains how that figure is checked, and the PTE voucher page covers buying a voucher in advance.

If you book the wrong one, act early. Pearson’s PTE Core FAQ allows free rescheduling up to 14 days before the test; cancelling 13 to 8 days before refunds 50%, and inside 7 days nothing.

How should you prepare for PTE Core?

Start from the tasks the two tests share. Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Respond to a Situation, Answer Short Question and Summarize Written Text appear in both, as do the reading multiple-choice and reorder tasks and most of the listening section. Practice on those carries straight across.

Then practise what is specific to Core: timed 9-minute emails (a complaint, a request to a landlord, a reply to a colleague) that state their purpose in the first line, and everyday reading and listening material rather than lectures.

To see where you stand on the shared tasks, take our free full-length PTE mock. It follows the PTE Academic format, so treat the speaking, reading and listening results as a guide to Core as well, and add your own timed email practice for the writing. If you are weighing study in Canada as a route to PR and want help planning the order of applications, our admission counselling team can help you map it out.
