What's on the SAT® Reading and Writing Test?
The Digital SAT® Reading and Writing section has 54 questions in 64 minutes, split into two 32-minute modules of 27 questions each. Our free SAT Reading and Writing practice test is one timed 27-question set, so you can practice a full module's pacing in a single sitting.
Two Modules, 64 Minutes
Reading and Writing comes first on test day, as two modules of 27 questions with 32 minutes for each. How you do on the first module decides whether the second one is harder or easier.
Four Content Domains
Craft and Structure is the largest share, at about 28% of questions. Information and Ideas and Standard English Conventions are about 26% each, and Expression of Ideas about 20%. Questions from all four appear in every module.
Short Passages, One Question Each
Every question comes with its own short passage, or pair of passages, of 25 to 150 words, followed by a single multiple-choice question. Passages are drawn from literature, history and social studies, the humanities and science.
Who Should Take This SAT® Reading and Writing Practice Test?
A short, timed SAT Reading and Writing practice test is useful at every stage of SAT prep. Here's who gets the most out of it
Students Starting SAT Reading and Writing Prep
Take it before you start studying to see which question types you already handle well and which need work. It gives you a starting point in 32 minutes instead of a full test day.
Students Whose Weaker Section Is Reading and Writing
If Reading and Writing is pulling your total score down, practicing the section on its own lets you spend your time where the points are, without sitting the Math section every time.
Students Working on Pacing
27 questions in 32 minutes works out to roughly 71 seconds per question, including the time to read each passage. A timed run shows where you slow down and which questions are worth a quick guess so you can move on.
Students With a Test Date Coming Up
In the last weeks before your SAT® date, a timed Reading and Writing practice test is a quick check on accuracy and speed between full-length practice tests.

Reading closely builds your skills. A timed SAT Reading and Writing practice test shows whether you can use them at test-day speed.
Practice at Test-Day Pace
Untimed practice hides pacing problems. With 32 minutes for 27 questions, a timed run shows whether you finish comfortably, rush the last few passages, or run out of time - and gives you a pace to aim for on the real SAT®.
See Which Question Types Cost You Points
Reviewing your results shows where your mistakes cluster - words in context, evidence and inference questions, transitions or punctuation - so your next study session goes to the skills that will move your score.
Get Used to Short Passages
Every question has its own passage, so you switch topics with each one. Timed practice builds the habit of reading each passage quickly and closely enough to answer its one question.
Make Your First Module Count
