IELTS One Skill Retake: How It Works and Whether You Should Use It

IELTS Skill Retake Guide — a student with earphones writing notes beside a laptop

Key Takeaways

  • IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit one of Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking instead of the whole test, once for each full IELTS test.
  • You must book and take it within 60 days of your original test, and the original test must be IELTS on Computer (Academic or General Training) at a centre that offers the retake.
  • You get a new Test Report Form showing the retake score with your other three original scores, and you choose whether to send the original or the new one.
  • Acceptance is decided by each organisation: Australia, New Zealand and the UK accept it for visas, but only some universities do, so check every one on your list first.
  • IDP India lists the One Skill Retake fee at INR 12,650; when two or more skills are short, a full retake is the better choice.

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit one section of IELTS, either Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, without taking the whole test again. You can use it once per full test, you must book and sit it within 60 days of your original test, and the original test must have been IELTS on Computer at a centre that offers the retake. In India, IDP lists the fee at INR 12,650.

It is a good option when one band is holding your overall score below a requirement and the other three are already safe. It is the wrong option when two or more skills are short, or when the organisation you are applying to does not accept it. This guide explains how the retake works, who accepts it, how it compares with a re-mark, and how to decide.

What is IELTS One Skill Retake?

According to ielts.org, you can retake “any one section of the IELTS test, whether it is Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking.” Your other three scores stay as they were on your original test. You then get a new Test Report Form (TRF) that shows the retaken score next to the three original scores, and you choose whether to send the original TRF or the new one.

The rules, as ielts.org and IDP India state them on 28 October 2026:

RuleWhat it means
Original testA full IELTS on Computer test, Academic or General Training, taken at a centre that offers One Skill Retake
DeadlineBook and take the retake within 60 days of your original test date
How manyOne retake for each full IELTS test
Which skillAny one of Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking
ResultA new TRF with the retaken score and your other three original scores; you choose which TRF to use
Result time3–5 days according to ielts.org; IDP India says IELTS on Computer results arrive within 2 days
Fee in IndiaINR 12,650 (IDP India, including the UKVI version)

Which IELTS tests can you retake one skill of?

Only a full test taken on computer qualifies. Both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are covered. If you took IELTS with Writing on paper, you cannot add a One Skill Retake to that result; you would need a full test.

IELTS for UKVI on computer is included in selected locations. ielts.org says UK Visas and Immigration “is accepting IELTS One Skill Retake for IELTS Academic and General Training tests on computer in selected locations,” and IDP India lists a separate One Skill Retake for IELTS on Computer for UKVI at the same INR 12,650. IELTS Life Skills is a different test with its own rules and is not part of One Skill Retake.

Who accepts IELTS One Skill Retake?

Acceptance is decided by each organisation, not by IELTS. ielts.org tells test takers to check with the organisation directly before booking. On its page for organisations, IELTS says that:

  • the governments of Australia and New Zealand accept One Skill Retake results for visa and migration purposes;
  • the UK government accepts it, and UKVI accepts it for Academic and General Training on computer in selected locations;
  • many professional and regulatory bodies accept it, including health regulators, teacher registration boards and engineering and accounting associations;
  • some universities accept it.

“Some universities” is the important phrase. Many admissions offices still ask for all four scores from a single sitting, and a university that accepts IELTS does not automatically accept a retake TRF. Read the English language page of every university on your list, or ask the admissions office in writing, before you book. If even one of your universities says no, a full retake may be the safer choice.

How does a One Skill Retake result look on your TRF?

The retake is not hidden. ielts.org says the new TRF “will clearly state the IELTS One Skill Retake result”, with the retaken score marked by the word “retake”. The TRF has a new TRF number and also shows the number of your original test. The date at the top is the date of your original four-skill test, not the retake date. Organisations that check results online see the retake in the result record as well.

Because the date stays the date of the original test, the result does not get a fresh validity period. IELTS results are usually accepted for two years from the test date, and that clock keeps running from your first sitting.

One Skill Retake or a re-mark: which should you choose?

A re-mark, called an Enquiry on Results (EOR), asks senior examiners to mark your test again. A One Skill Retake means sitting the section again. They solve different problems.

Enquiry on Results (re-mark)One Skill Retake
What happensYour existing answers are marked againYou take one section again
Skills coveredIDP describes Writing and Speaking re-marked by senior examiners who do not see your first score; the fee is the same for one skill or severalAny one of the four skills
Best whenYou believe your performance on the day was marked too lowYou know you can do better in one skill with more preparation
Can you do both on the same test? Not at the same time. IDP says that if you request an EOR on your full test, you must wait for the re-mark outcome before booking a One Skill Retake on that test.

Watch the clock if you want to try a re-mark first. The re-mark has its own deadline and can take up to 21 days, and the 60-day retake window keeps running while you wait. The rechecking fee in India is listed in our IELTS fee guide.

When should you use One Skill Retake?

It works best when all of these are true:

  • Exactly one skill is below the score you need, and the other three already meet the requirement with some margin.
  • Every organisation you are applying to accepts One Skill Retake results.
  • Your original test was IELTS on Computer at a centre that offers the retake, and you are still inside the 60-day window.
  • You have a clear reason the score will rise, such as targeted practice on that skill, not just hoping for a better day.

A typical case: you need 7.0 in every skill for a UK master’s course, and you scored Listening 8.0, Reading 7.5, Speaking 7.0 and Writing 6.5. Retaking only Writing costs less than a full test and keeps your other three scores, provided your universities accept the retake.

When is a full retake the better choice?

  • Two or more skills are short. You get only one retake per test, so a single-skill retake cannot fix two gaps.
  • Your overall band is the problem. If you need, say, 7.0 overall and your four scores are all around 6.5, one improved skill may not lift the average far enough. Our IELTS band calculator shows how much one higher score moves your overall band.
  • An organisation on your list does not accept it. A retake TRF you cannot send to every university is of limited use.
  • You are outside the 60-day window, or your original test was not on computer.

Our guide to IELTS band scores explains how the overall band is rounded, which helps you work out whether one skill is enough.

How do you book IELTS One Skill Retake in India?

  1. Log in to the IDP candidate portal where you see your results. IDP India says your eligibility shows there.
  2. Next to the skill you want to retake, select Retake and choose a date and centre within 60 days of your original test.
  3. Use the same valid passport you used for the original booking.
  4. Pay the fee. IDP India lists INR 12,650.

IDP India’s page says the option is available in all cities across India, but other text on the same page still mentions only Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Check that your preferred centre offers the retake before you plan around a date. Dates and centres are covered in our guide to IELTS exam dates.

How should you prepare for a One Skill Retake?

Treat it as a short, focused preparation cycle on one skill. Work out why the score was low, using the official band descriptors for Writing and Speaking or your error pattern for Listening and Reading. Then practise under timed conditions, because the retake is the same section, on computer, with the same timing as the full test.

Before you book, take a timed free IELTS mock test to check that the skill you want to retake has actually moved. If you are unsure which universities on your list accept a retake, our admissions counsellors can check their English language requirements with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IELTS One Skill Retake?

It is an option to retake one section of IELTS, either Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, instead of the full test. Your other three scores stay as they were on your original test.

How many times can I use One Skill Retake?

Once for each full IELTS test. If you need to improve two skills, or need another attempt after a retake, you have to book a full test.

What is the deadline for IELTS One Skill Retake?

You must book and take the retake within 60 days of your original test date.

Can I take One Skill Retake after a paper-based IELTS?

No. The original test must be a full IELTS on Computer test, Academic or General Training, taken at a centre that offers One Skill Retake.

What is the IELTS One Skill Retake fee in India?

IDP India lists the fee at INR 12,650, including for the IELTS on Computer for UKVI version. Check the amount in your candidate portal before paying.

Do universities accept IELTS One Skill Retake?

Some do and some do not. IELTS says the decision belongs to each organisation, so check the English language requirements of every university on your list, or ask the admissions office in writing, before you book.

Is One Skill Retake accepted for UK, Australia and New Zealand visas?

IELTS says the governments of Australia and New Zealand accept it for visa and migration purposes, and UK Visas and Immigration accepts it for Academic and General Training on computer in selected locations.

Will my Test Report Form show that I took a retake?

Yes. The new Test Report Form clearly states the One Skill Retake result, marks the retaken score with the word retake, and shows the date of your original test.

Does a One Skill Retake extend the validity of my IELTS score?

No. The new Test Report Form carries the date of your original four-skill test, so the usual two-year validity still runs from that date.

How long do One Skill Retake results take?

IELTS says 3 to 5 days, while IDP India says IELTS on Computer results arrive within 2 days. Plan around the longer time if you have a deadline.

Should I ask for a re-mark or take a One Skill Retake?

Ask for a re-mark if you believe your answers were marked too low, and choose a retake if you know you can perform better in one skill. You cannot run both on the same test at once: you must wait for the re-mark outcome before booking a retake.
