What’s in PTE Listening?

Listening is Part 3 of PTE Academic: 31–39 minutes across eight question types, and every recording plays once. Our free listening practice is a timed section test, 19 items in 35 minutes, with the Listening items auto-graded as soon as you finish.

Part 3: 31–39 Minutes, Eight Types

Listening is the last part of the exam, and it closes with Write from Dictation. Recordings run from a 3–5 second sentence up to 120 seconds of audio.

Every Recording Plays Once

You cannot replay the audio, but note-taking is allowed while it plays. The real exam provides an erasable noteboard; practise with paper and a pen.

Integrated With Writing and Speaking

Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation also count toward writing, and Repeat Sentence in Part 1 also counts toward listening.

Who Should Take This PTE Listening Practice Test?

Timed listening practice helps at every stage of PTE prep. Here’s who gets the most out of it

Students Starting PTE Prep

Take a timed listening section before you start studying to see which question types you handle well and which need work. It gives you a starting point without a full mock.

Students Whose Weaker Skill Is Listening

If listening is pulling your overall score down, practising Part 3 on its own lets you work on dictation and note-taking without sitting the whole exam.

Students Used to Replaying Audio

If you practise with audio you can pause and replay, PTE’s single play is a shock. Timed practice builds the note-taking habit that lets you answer from your notes.

Students With a Test Date Coming Up

In the last weeks before your PTE Academic date, a timed listening section is a quick check on accuracy and concentration between full-length mocks.

The PTE Listening Question Types

Part 3 has eight question types. Here’s what each one tests, with the recording length Pearson sets, so you know what your PTE listening practice is training.

Summarize Spoken Text - 60 to 90 Seconds of Audio

Listen to a short lecture, then write a summary of 50–70 words. You get 10 minutes once the audio finishes.

  • Feeds listening and writing
  • A written answer: AI-graded, a paid unlock on the free plan
  • Take notes on the main point and two or three supporting ones
  • Tip: stay inside 50–70 words; going outside the limit loses form marks

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers - 80 to 120 Seconds

Listen and select every option that answers the question.

  • Negative marking: a wrong pick cancels out a right one, and the item cannot fall below zero
  • Tip: select only the options you are confident about

Fill in the Blanks - 30 to 60 Seconds

Type the missing words into a transcript as you listen.

  • Spelling counts
  • Tip: jot each missing word as you hear it, then type it in and check the spelling once the audio ends

Highlight Correct Summary - 30 to 90 Seconds

Choose the summary that best matches the recording.

  • Tests whether you caught the main idea, not just the details
  • Tip: rule out summaries that add points the speaker never made

Multiple Choice, Single Answer - 30 to 90 Seconds

Listen and choose the one correct answer.

  • No negative marking
  • Tip: read the question and options before the audio starts so you know what to listen for

Select Missing Word - 20 to 70 Seconds

The recording stops before its last word or words; choose the option that completes it.

  • Tests whether you can follow a speaker’s line of thought
  • Tip: track where the argument is heading so you can predict the ending

Highlight Incorrect Words - 15 to 50 Seconds

Follow a transcript as you listen and select the words that differ from the recording.

  • Tests close listening while you read
  • Tip: keep your eyes level with the speaker and select a word as soon as you hear a difference

Write from Dictation - 3 to 5 Seconds

Hear a short sentence and type it exactly.

  • Feeds listening and writing
  • Each correct word earns credit, so type every word you caught
  • Tip: check grammar and spelling before you submit

Why Take Timed PTE Listening Practice Tests?

Working through question types builds your listening skills. A timed section shows whether you can use them when each recording plays once.

Train for One-Play Audio

Every recording plays once. Timed practice builds the note-taking habit you need to answer from memory and notes, not from a replay.

See Which Types Cost You Marks

Reviewing your answers shows where mistakes cluster - dictation, the blanks or the multiple-choice items - so your next session goes to what will move your score.

Handle Negative Marking

On Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers a wrong pick costs marks. Timed practice is where you learn when to select a second option and when to stop.

Protect Your Writing Score Too

Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation also count toward writing, so accuracy here pays back in two skill scores.

How to Get the Most From Your PTE Listening Practice Test

Three steps to turn one 35-minute listening section into a clear plan.

1

Set Up Like Test Day

The timer cannot be paused once it starts, so set aside 35 uninterrupted minutes. Use a laptop or desktop with a headset, in a quiet room, on a stable connection with other tabs and downloads closed.

2

Take Notes as You Listen

Keep paper and a pen beside you. Each recording plays once, and note-taking is allowed while it plays.

3

Review, Practise, Retake

Go through your result, practise the question types you missed, then take another timed section to check your progress.

What to Do After Your PTE Listening Practice Test

Your result is a starting point. Here’s how to turn it into progress.

Analyse Your Results

Look for patterns rather than single mistakes. Did you lose marks on spelling in dictation and the blanks, on detail in the multiple-choice items, or on the main idea in the summaries?

Set a Listening Score Goal

Check the overall and per-skill minimums your university or visa route publishes, then set a listening target and a realistic timeline to reach it before your test date.

Practise Your Weak Types

Drill the question types your result flagged, starting with Write from Dictation. For more timed practice, the PTE Practice Pack adds 10 full-length mocks and 30 section tests, 10 of them for Listening.

Move Up to a Full-Length Mock

When your listening is where you want it, take a full-length PTE mock test to check all three parts, and your stamina, in one sitting. The free plan includes one.

Everything you need to know about our free PTE listening practice and Part 3 of PTE Academic.

1. Is the PTE listening practice really free?
Yes. Create a free Galvanize account and start practising at no cost. The free plan includes a full-length mock and section tests in every section, including Listening.
2. Can I replay the audio in PTE Listening?
No. Every recording plays once, in the real exam and in our Listening section test. You can take notes while it plays, and the real exam provides an erasable noteboard.
3. Is there negative marking in PTE Listening?
Yes, on Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: an incorrect selection cancels out a correct one, and the item cannot fall below zero. Select only the options you are confident about.
4. Which listening tasks matter most?
The integrated ones are worth practising first. Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation count toward both listening and writing, so a weak answer on either can pull down two skill scores.
5. How long is PTE Listening?
31–39 minutes, across eight question types. Listening is Part 3, the last part of the exam, and it closes with Write from Dictation. Our Listening section test has 19 items in 35 minutes.
6. Can I take notes during PTE Listening?
Yes. Note-taking is allowed while the audio plays, and the real exam provides an erasable noteboard. Practise with paper and a pen so note-taking is a habit by test day.
7. How is the listening practice test scored?
The Listening items are auto-graded as soon as you finish, so you see your result straight away. Summarize Spoken Text is a written answer; like Speaking & Writing answers, it is AI-graded, a paid unlock on the free plan (pricing varies in India; internationally it is $1). It is an estimate for study planning, not an official Pearson score.
