What’s in PTE Speaking?

Speaking sits inside Part 1 of PTE Academic, Speaking & Writing, which runs 76–84 minutes. You record every answer into a microphone, and an AI model scores content, oral fluency and pronunciation. Our free speaking practice is the Speaking & Writing section test: 38 items in 80 minutes, with Paid AI Grading available on your recordings.

Part 1: Speaking & Writing, 76–84 Minutes

Speaking is not a separate paper. It shares Part 1 with the two writing tasks, Summarize Written Text and Write Essay, and the part opens with an unscored Personal Introduction.

Seven Scored Speaking Tasks

Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. The last two are the newest tasks on the current format.

Recorded and Scored by AI

Every answer is recorded through a headset microphone. The recording closes after about three seconds of silence, and two speaking tasks also feed your reading or listening score.

Who Should Take This PTE Speaking Practice Test?

Timed speaking practice helps at every stage of PTE prep. Here’s who gets the most out of it

Students Starting PTE Prep

Try the speaking tasks before you start studying to hear how you sound under the timers. It shows which tasks feel natural and which need work, without sitting a full mock.

Students Whose Weaker Skill Is Speaking

If speaking is pulling your overall score down, practising Part 1 on its own lets you spend your time on the tasks that cost you marks, without sitting Reading and Listening every time.

Students Moving Across From IELTS or TOEFL

In PTE you record your answers into a microphone rather than speak to an examiner, and the preparation windows are seconds long. A timed run gets you used to starting on the tone.

Students With a Test Date Coming Up

In the last weeks before your PTE Academic date, a timed speaking section is a quick check on fluency and pacing between full-length mocks.

The PTE Speaking Question Types

Pearson sets a preparation and response time for every speaking task. Here’s what each one tests, with its timing, so you know what your PTE speaking practice is training.

Personal Introduction - Not Scored

25 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to speak about yourself.

  • Not scored, but it is the first recording of the test
  • Use it as a microphone check: settle your volume and pace before the scored tasks begin

Read Aloud - 30 to 40 Seconds to Prepare

Read a text of up to 60 words aloud.

  • Feeds speaking and reading, so it counts twice
  • Tests oral fluency, pronunciation and content
  • Tip: use the preparation time to mark phrase breaks, then read at a steady conversational pace

Repeat Sentence - 15 Seconds to Respond

Hear a sentence of 3–9 seconds and repeat it exactly.

  • Feeds speaking and listening
  • Listen for meaning chunks rather than single words
  • Tip: keep the rhythm of the original even if you miss a word; stopping costs fluency

Describe Image - 25 Seconds to Study, 40 to Speak

Describe a graph, chart, map, diagram or picture.

  • Tests content, oral fluency and pronunciation
  • Tip: say what the image shows, give two or three key features, then a one-line conclusion
  • Keep talking: about three seconds of silence closes the recording

Retell Lecture - 10 Seconds to Prepare, 40 to Speak

Listen to a lecture of up to 90 seconds, then retell it in your own words.

  • Take notes while the lecture plays: key terms, examples and the conclusion
  • Tip: lead with the topic, then give the main points in the order you heard them

Answer Short Question - 10 Seconds to Answer

Hear a question of 3–9 seconds and answer it.

  • A single word or short phrase is enough; full sentences use up the time
  • Tests everyday vocabulary and quick comprehension

Summarize Group Discussion - 10 Seconds to Prepare, 2 Minutes to Speak

Listen to up to 3 minutes of discussion between several speakers, then summarize it.

  • One of the newest tasks on the current format
  • Tip: note each speaker’s main view, then report where they agree and disagree
  • Two minutes is long: plan an opening, the key points and a close

Respond to a Situation - 10 Seconds to Prepare, 40 to Speak

Respond to a short everyday situation as you would in real life.

  • One of the newest tasks on the current format
  • Tip: address every part of the situation and keep a polite, natural tone
  • Keep going through small slips rather than restarting

Why Take Timed PTE Speaking Practice Tests?

Reading tips improves your technique. A timed speaking section shows whether it holds up when the microphone is on.

Practise Starting on the Tone

The recording closes after about three seconds of silence, and hesitation costs fluency marks. Timed practice trains you to start speaking as soon as the recording opens and to keep going.

See Which Tasks Cost You Marks

With Paid AI Grading or the PTE Practice Pack, your report shows where your marks go - content, fluency or pronunciation - so your next session goes to the tasks that will move your score.

Get Used to Seconds-Long Preparation

Ten seconds before you retell a lecture, 25 seconds to study an image. Practising with the real timers is how you learn to plan an answer that fast.

Protect Two Scores at Once

Read Aloud also feeds reading and Repeat Sentence also feeds listening, so a weak answer on either can pull down two skill scores. Timed practice on those tasks pays back twice.

How to Get the Most From Your PTE Speaking Practice Test

Three steps to turn one timed speaking section into a clear plan.

1

Set Up Like Test Day

The timer cannot be paused once it starts, so set aside 80 uninterrupted minutes. Use a laptop or desktop and a headset with a microphone, in a quiet room, and run a microphone check first.

2

Start on the Tone, Keep Going

Begin speaking as soon as the recording starts. If you stumble, carry on: correcting yourself costs more fluency marks than the original slip.

3

Review, Practise, Retake

Play back your recordings, or your AI grading report if you unlocked it, practise the task types that cost you marks, then take another timed section to check your progress.

What to Do After Your PTE Speaking Practice Test

Your results are a starting point. Here’s how to turn it into progress.

Analyse Your Results

Look for patterns rather than single answers. Did you lose marks on fluency, on pronunciation, or on content in the lecture and discussion tasks?

Set a Speaking Score Goal

Check the overall and per-skill minimums your university or visa route publishes, then set a speaking target and a realistic timeline to reach it before your test date.

Practise Your Weak Tasks

Record yourself on the task types that cost you marks and play it back. For more timed practice, the PTE Practice Pack adds 10 full-length mocks and 30 section tests, 10 of them for Speaking & Writing.

Move Up to a Full-Length Mock

When your speaking is where you want it, take a full-length PTE mock test to check all three parts, and your stamina, in one sitting. The free plan includes one.

Frequently Asked Questions About PTE Speaking Practice

Everything you need to know about our free PTE speaking practice and the speaking tasks in PTE Academic.

PTE speaking practice test FAQ
1. Is the PTE speaking practice really free?
Yes. Create a free Galvanize account and start practising at no cost. The free plan includes a full-length mock and section tests in every section, including Speaking & Writing. AI grading on Speaking & Writing is a paid unlock on the free plan (pricing varies in India; internationally it is $1).
2. How is PTE speaking scored?
By an AI model, on content, oral fluency and pronunciation, and reported on the 10–90 scale. Some speaking tasks are integrated: Read Aloud also counts toward reading, and Repeat Sentence toward listening.
3. Does my accent matter in PTE speaking?
Not in itself. PTE scores oral fluency and pronunciation, which means how smoothly and clearly you speak, not whether you sound like a particular country. What costs marks is hesitation, long pauses, repetition and false starts.
4. What happens if I pause while speaking?
The recording closes after about three seconds of silence, and nothing after that is captured. Shorter hesitations are recorded but count against oral fluency. If you stumble, keep going rather than correcting yourself.
5. How long is the speaking part of PTE?
Speaking has no separate section time. It sits inside Part 1, Speaking & Writing, which runs 76–84 minutes and also includes Summarize Written Text and Write Essay. Each speaking task has its own preparation and response timer.
6. Which speaking tasks also count toward other skills?
Read Aloud also counts toward reading, and Repeat Sentence toward listening. Because PTE scoring is integrated, a weak answer on either can pull down two skill scores, so they are worth practising early.
7. How is speaking graded in the Galvanize practice test?
Speaking & Writing answers are AI-graded on content, fluency, pronunciation, form, grammar and vocabulary, usually within a few minutes. On the free plan, AI grading is a paid unlock (pricing varies in India; internationally it is $1); the PTE Practice Pack includes it. It is an estimate for study planning, not an official Pearson score.
8. What do I need to take the speaking practice?
A laptop or desktop, a headset with a microphone and a quiet room. Your speaking answers are recorded, as in the real exam, so run a microphone check before you begin.
