What’s in PTE Reading?

Reading is Part 2 of PTE Academic: 23–30 minutes across five question types. Our free reading practice is a timed section test, 17 items in 30 minutes, auto-graded the moment you finish.

Part 2: 23–30 Minutes, Five Types

Reading comes after Speaking & Writing. It has no per-item timer, only a section clock, so how you split the time between items is up to you.

Integrated With Writing

Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks also counts toward writing, and Read Aloud in Part 1 also counts toward reading. Your reading score does not rest on Part 2 alone.

Negative Marking on One Type Only

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers is the only reading type where a wrong pick cancels out a right one. The other four carry no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave one blank.

Who Should Take This PTE Reading Practice Test?

Timed reading practice helps at every stage of PTE prep. Here’s who gets the most out of it

Students Starting PTE Prep

Take a timed reading section before you start studying to see which question types you handle well and which need work. It gives you a starting point without a full mock.

Students Whose Weaker Skill Is Reading

If reading is pulling your overall score down, practising Part 2 on its own lets you work on the blanks and re-order tasks without sitting the whole exam.

Students Working on Pacing

Reading has only a section clock, so it is easy to over-invest in one Re-order Paragraphs item at the expense of three simpler ones. A timed run shows where your minutes go.

Students With a Test Date Coming Up

In the last weeks before your PTE Academic date, a timed reading section is a quick check on accuracy and speed between full-length mocks.

The PTE Reading Question Types

Part 2 has five question types. Here’s what each one tests, with the text length Pearson sets, so you know what your PTE reading practice is training.

Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks - Up to 300 Words

Choose the right word for each gap from a dropdown list.

  • Feeds reading and writing
  • Tests collocation, grammar and vocabulary in context
  • Tip: read the whole sentence, then check that your word fits both the meaning and the grammar

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers - Up to 350 Words

Read a text and select every option that answers the question.

  • Negative marking: a wrong pick cancels out a right one, and the item cannot fall below zero
  • Tip: select only the options you are confident about

Re-order Paragraphs - Up to 150 Words

Put jumbled text boxes into the right order.

  • Tests how well you follow the logic and cohesion of a text
  • Tip: find the opening sentence first, then look for pronouns and linking words that tie pairs together
  • Watch the clock: don’t let one item take the time for three others

Fill in the Blanks (Drag and Drop) - Up to 80 Words

Drag words from a box into the gaps in a short text.

  • Tests vocabulary and grammar in a short passage
  • Tip: decide what kind of word each gap needs before you look at the options

Multiple Choice, Single Answer - Up to 300 Words

Read a text and choose the one correct answer.

  • No negative marking
  • Tip: rule out options that are only partly true or not stated in the text

Why Take Timed PTE Reading Practice Tests?

Working through question types builds your reading skills. A timed section shows whether you can use them against the clock.

Manage a Section Clock

Reading has no per-item timer, only a section clock, so pacing is yours to manage. Timed practice shows whether you finish comfortably or rush the last few items.

See Which Types Cost You Marks

Reviewing your answers shows where mistakes cluster - the blanks tasks, Re-order Paragraphs or the multiple-choice items - so your next session goes to what will move your score.

Handle Negative Marking

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers is the one reading type where a wrong pick costs marks. Timed practice is where you learn when to select a second option and when to stop.

Protect Your Writing Score Too

Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks also counts toward writing, so accuracy on the dropdown blanks pays back in two skill scores.

How to Get the Most From Your PTE Reading Practice Test

Three steps to turn one 30-minute reading section into a clear plan.

1

Treat It Like Test Day

The timer cannot be paused once it starts, so set aside 30 uninterrupted minutes. Use a laptop or desktop, not a phone or tablet: the smaller screen changes how reading items behave.

2

Answer Every Item

Only Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers carries negative marking. Everywhere else there is no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave an item blank.

3

Review, Practise, Retake

Go through your result, practise the question types you missed, then take another timed section to check your progress.

What to Do After Your PTE Reading Practice Test

Your result is a starting point. Here’s how to turn it into progress.

Analyse Your Results

Look for patterns rather than single mistakes. Did you lose marks on grammar in the blanks, on the order of paragraphs, or on the last items as time ran out?

Set a Reading Score Goal

Check the overall and per-skill minimums your university or visa route publishes, then set a reading target and a realistic timeline to reach it before your test date.

Practise Your Weak Types

Drill the question types your result flagged, starting with the blanks tasks. For more timed practice, the PTE Practice Pack adds 10 full-length mocks and 30 section tests, 10 of them for Reading.

Move Up to a Full-Length Mock

When your reading is where you want it, take a full-length PTE mock test to check all three parts, and your stamina, in one sitting. The free plan includes one.

Frequently Asked Questions About PTE Reading Practice

Everything you need to know about our free PTE reading practice and Part 2 of PTE Academic.

PTE reading practice test FAQ
1. Is the PTE reading practice really free?
Yes. Create a free Galvanize account and start practising at no cost. The free plan includes a full-length mock and section tests in every section, including Reading.
2. How many questions are in PTE Reading?
Pearson does not set a fixed number: it varies between test versions, within Part 2’s 23–30 minutes and five question types. Across the whole exam you will see between 52 and 64 scored items. Our Reading section test has 17 items in 30 minutes.
3. What are the PTE Reading question types?
Five: Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks, with dropdowns; Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers; Re-order Paragraphs; Fill in the Blanks, with drag and drop; and Multiple Choice, Single Answer. Texts run from up to 80 words to up to 350 words.
4. Is there negative marking in PTE Reading?
Only on Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers, where an incorrect selection cancels out a correct one and the item cannot fall below zero. The other four reading types carry no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave them blank.
5. Which reading tasks also count toward other skills?
Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks also counts toward writing. In the other direction, Read Aloud in Part 1 also counts toward reading, so your reading score does not come from Part 2 alone.
6. Is there a timer on each reading question?
No. Reading has a section clock of 23–30 minutes but no per-item timer, so you decide how long to spend on each item. Don’t let one hard Re-order Paragraphs item take the time for three easier ones.
7. How is the reading practice test scored?
Reading section tests are auto-graded the moment you finish, so you see your result straight away. It is an estimate for study planning, not an official Pearson score.
