What’s in PTE Writing?

Writing sits inside Part 1 of PTE Academic alongside speaking. Two tasks are pure writing: Summarize Written Text and Write Essay. Your writing score also draws on Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation in Listening. Our free writing practice is the Speaking & Writing section test, 38 items in 80 minutes, with Paid AI Grading available on your typed answers.

Two Writing Tasks in Part 1

Summarize Written Text and Write Essay sit in Part 1, Speaking & Writing, which runs 76–84 minutes. There is no separate writing paper.

Integrated Scoring

Your writing score also draws on Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation in Listening, and on Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks in Reading. Writing practice is not only about the essay.

Form Limits Are Enforced

The summary must be one sentence of no more than 75 words, and the essay 200–300 words. Break the form and you lose form marks, and the answer can score zero.

Who Should Take This PTE Writing Practice Test?

Timed writing practice helps at every stage of PTE prep. Here’s who gets the most out of it

Students Starting PTE Prep

Try the writing tasks before you start studying to see how you handle a one-sentence summary and a timed essay. It gives you a starting point without a full mock.

Students Whose Weaker Skill Is Writing

If writing is pulling your overall score down, practising Part 1 on its own lets you work on the summary and the essay without sitting Reading and Listening every time.

Students Who Lose Marks on Form

Over-long summaries and essays outside 200–300 words cost marks however good the English. Timed practice builds the habit of checking the word count before you move on.

Students With a Test Date Coming Up

In the last weeks before your PTE Academic date, a timed writing section is a quick check on accuracy and pace between full-length mocks.

The PTE Writing Question Types

Two tasks in Part 1 are pure writing, and two listening tasks feed your writing score too. Here’s what each one tests, with its Pearson timing or length.

Summarize Written Text - 10 Minutes

Read a text of up to 300 words and summarize it in one sentence of no more than 75 words.

  • Part 1, Speaking & Writing
  • One sentence only: a second full stop breaks the form
  • Tip: find the main idea first, then join two or three supporting points with linking words

Write Essay - 20 Minutes

Respond to a prompt of 2–3 sentences in 200–300 words.

  • Part 1, Speaking & Writing
  • Tests how you build an argument, as well as grammar and vocabulary
  • Tip: spend the first couple of minutes planning and leave time at the end to check the word count

Summarize Spoken Text - 50 to 70 Words

Listen to 60–90 seconds of audio, then write a summary of 50–70 words. You get 10 minutes once the audio finishes.

  • Part 3, Listening, so you practise it in the Listening section test
  • A written answer: AI-graded, a paid unlock on the free plan
  • Take notes while the audio plays: it plays once
  • Tip: cover the speaker’s main point and two or three supporting ones

Write from Dictation - Type What You Hear

Hear a sentence of 3–5 seconds and type it exactly.

  • Part 3, Listening, and it feeds writing too
  • Spelling counts: each correct word earns credit
  • Tip: note the words as you hear them, then check grammar and spelling before you submit

Why Take Timed PTE Writing Practice Tests?

Knowing the rules improves your technique. A timed writing section shows whether you can apply them against the clock.

Practise Inside the Word Limits

Over 75 words in the summary, or outside 200–300 in the essay, loses form marks and can zero the answer. Timed practice builds the habit of checking the counter before you move on.

See Where Your Marks Go

With Paid AI Grading or the PTE Practice Pack, your report shows whether marks go on content, form, grammar or vocabulary, so your next session goes to the part of your writing that will move your score.

Pace a 20-Minute Essay

Twenty minutes is enough for a planned, checked essay only if you pace it. Timed practice shows how long you spend planning, writing and checking.

Remember Writing Is Integrated

Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation in Listening also feed your writing score. Practise them alongside Part 1 so your writing score does not rest on two tasks alone.

How to Get the Most From Your PTE Writing Practice Test

Three steps to turn one timed writing section into a clear plan.

1

Treat It Like Test Day

The timer cannot be paused once it starts, so set aside 80 uninterrupted minutes on a laptop or desktop. Part 1 includes speaking too, so have your headset and microphone ready.

2

Watch the Word Count

Keep the summary to one sentence of no more than 75 words and the essay between 200 and 300 words. Check the counter before you move on.

3

Review, Practise, Retake

Check your answers against the form rules, or your AI grading report if you unlocked it, practise the writing tasks that cost you marks, then take another timed section to check your progress.

What to Do After Your PTE Writing Practice Test

Your results are a starting point. Here’s how to turn it into progress.

Analyse Your Results

Look for patterns rather than single answers. Did you lose marks on form, on grammar, or on content that missed the main point?

Set a Writing Score Goal

Check the overall and per-skill minimums your university or visa route publishes, then set a writing target and a realistic timeline to reach it before your test date.

Practise Your Weak Tasks

Rewrite the answers that broke the form or missed the main point, then practise the listening tasks that feed writing. For more timed practice, the PTE Practice Pack adds 10 full-length mocks and 30 section tests, 10 each for Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening.

Move Up to a Full-Length Mock

When your writing is where you want it, take a full-length PTE mock test to check all three parts, and your stamina, in one sitting. The free plan includes one.

Frequently Asked Questions About PTE Writing Practice

Everything you need to know about our free PTE writing practice and the writing tasks in PTE Academic.

PTE writing practice test FAQ
1. Is the PTE writing practice really free?
Yes. Create a free Galvanize account and start practising at no cost. The free plan includes a full-length mock and section tests in every section, including Speaking & Writing. AI grading on Speaking & Writing is a paid unlock on the free plan (pricing varies in India; internationally it is $1).
2. How is PTE writing scored?
By AI, with human expert review on tasks such as the essay, on traits including content, form, grammar and vocabulary. Your writing score also draws on Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation in Listening, and on Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks in Reading.
3. What is the word limit for the PTE essay?
200–300 words, written in 20 minutes. Summarize Written Text has its own limit: one sentence of no more than 75 words, in 10 minutes, and Summarize Spoken Text asks for 50–70 words. Going outside a limit loses form marks and can zero the answer.
4. Can I use bullet points in PTE writing?
Avoid them. Write Essay expects continuous paragraphs, and Summarize Written Text must be one complete sentence, so a bulleted answer breaks the form the task asks for.
5. Is writing a separate section in PTE?
No. Writing is part of Part 1, Speaking & Writing, which runs 76–84 minutes. Summarize Written Text and Write Essay are the two pure writing tasks; Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation sit in Part 3, Listening, but feed your writing score too.
6. Where do I practise the listening tasks that feed writing?
In the Listening section test, just as they sit in Part 3 of the real exam. Your free account includes section tests in every section, so you can practise Part 1 writing and the listening-based writing tasks separately. Summarize Spoken Text is a written answer; like Speaking & Writing answers, it is AI-graded, a paid unlock on the free plan (pricing varies in India; internationally it is $1).
7. How is writing graded in the Galvanize practice test?
Speaking & Writing answers are AI-graded on content, fluency, pronunciation, form, grammar and vocabulary, usually within a few minutes. On the free plan, AI grading is a paid unlock (pricing varies in India; internationally it is $1); the PTE Practice Pack includes it. It is an estimate for study planning, not an official Pearson score.
